Yongin to Establish Materials, Parts, and Equipment Industrial Complex in 'L-Shaped' Semiconductor Valley

[Asia Economy (Yongin) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province has prepared a roadmap to create an 'L-shaped' semiconductor belt and will establish an industrial complex where semiconductor materials, parts, and equipment companies can settle.

Yongin City plans to create a 350,000㎡ (approximately 105,800 pyeong) industrial complex in Cheoin-gu for semiconductor materials, parts, and equipment companies to settle in the L-shaped semiconductor belt, which starts from the materials, parts, and equipment research and manufacturing facilities (440,000㎡) within Yongin Platform City and continues through ▲ Samsung Electronics Giheung Campus Future Research Complex (1,080,000㎡) ▲ Giheung Future Advanced Industrial Complex (Semes, 110,000㎡) ▲ Jigok General Industrial Complex (Lam Research R&D Center, 70,000㎡) ▲ Tongsam General Industrial Complex (Surplus Global, 50,000㎡) ▲ 2nd Yongin Technovalley (270,000㎡) ▲ Yongin Semiconductor Cluster (4,160,000㎡) ▲ Wonsam Semiconductor Cooperation Complex (project complex volume under negotiation, 240,000㎡), the city announced on the 20th.

To this end, the city will conduct a demand survey targeting semiconductor companies by the end of this year, review location and development methods, and secure industrial complex volume through consultations with Gyeonggi Province, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. Once the volume is allocated, the city will establish an industrial complex plan in 2025 and begin phased development of the industrial complex from 2026.

Along with this, the city will establish a dedicated organization for the systematic fostering of the semiconductor industry and prepare grounds to actively relax building regulations within the industrial complex to support resident companies concurrently.

Additionally, to ensure the timely establishment of Samsung Electronics Giheung Campus Future Research Complex, the city plans to strengthen partnerships with Samsung Electronics and swiftly support the permitting procedures.

The city is also actively promoting the enactment of the 'Semiconductor Industry Fostering and Support Ordinance (tentative name),' the first of its kind among basic local governments nationwide, and plans to submit it to the Yongin City Council in November.

Mayor Lee Sang-il of Yongin said, "Following the L-shaped semiconductor belt roadmap, we will achieve the agglomeration of materials, parts, and equipment companies and lay the foundation to perfectly establish a semiconductor ecosystem with global competitiveness alongside Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix." He emphasized, "Together with 1.1 million Yongin citizens, we will grow and develop Yongin into a global semiconductor hub city comparable to Silicon Valley in the U.S."
