Gwangju Waterworks Headquarters Completes Bongseon Reservoir Installation... Operation Starts from the 24th

Clean Tap Water Supply to Over 110,000 Households in Dong-gu, Seo-gu, and Nam-gu Areas Amid Water Quality Incident

Gwangju Waterworks Headquarters Completes Bongseon Reservoir Installation... Operation Starts from the 24th

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] It has become possible to stably supply cleaner tap water to more than 110,000 households in Yongsan District of Dong-gu, Seo-gu, and Nam-gu areas in Gwangju Metropolitan City.

Gwangju Waterworks Headquarters announced on the 15th that the installation of Bongseon Reservoir, located at the boundary between Yongsan District in Dong-gu and Bongseon-dong in Nam-gu, has been completed.

Since June 2017, the city has invested 47.8 billion KRW of city funds to build the Bongseon Reservoir with a facility capacity of 23,000 tons and 10.5 km of transmission and distribution pipelines at the boundary between Yongsan District in Dong-gu and Bongseon-dong in Nam-gu, along with the installation of an upper-level children's park.

With the completion of this project, the direct water supply zones in Yongsan District of Dong-gu, Seo-gu, and Nam-gu areas will be converted into indirect water supply zones and will begin normal operation from the 24th.

Accordingly, even in the event of a water quality accident, the system can supply water for 12 hours, securing response capability, and by equalizing water pressure, tap water will be supplied more stably.

The Waterworks Headquarters plans to carry out a water system conversion from the 22nd to the 23rd, changing the direct water supply zones to indirect water supply zones in areas including Dong-gu (Sotae and Yongsan-dong), Seo-gu (Nongseong, Gwangcheon, Hwajeong, Pungam, Yangdong), and Nam-gu (Bongseon, Bangnim, Yangrim, Baegun, Juwol, Jinwol, Wolsan, Sa, Seodong).

As a result, some consumers may experience cloudy water, so it is advised to store necessary water before the 22nd, refrain from using washing machines and water purifiers during the expected cloudy water discharge times, and to check the water quality before use even after the 24th.

Meanwhile, the Jesuk Kkumsaem Children's Park, created on top of the reservoir, has been equipped with a combination playground, fitness center, badminton court, and rest area. After handing over to the Nam-gu Office's Parks and Greenery Department, the park will be opened to the public, expected to enhance the citizen-friendly image of the waterworks and improve community welfare.

Lee Jeongsam, head of the Waterworks Headquarters, said, “Currently, the Waterworks Headquarters operates 17 reservoirs, and by 2025, we plan to establish two new reservoirs including Jisan Reservoir and expand and improve four reservoirs including Songjeong Reservoir to convert the entire Gwangju city into an indirect water supply zone.” He added, “We will do our best to achieve ESG management for sustainable waterworks development, as well as to supply clean tap water to citizens more stably.”
