10th Keynote Speech Among 185 World Leaders at New York UN General Assembly... Agreements Reached in Korea-US and Korea-Japan Summits
[Asia Economy Reporter Baek Kyunghwan] President Yoon Suk-yeol will embark on a 5-night, 7-day tour of the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada starting on the 18th. In the UK, he will attend the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II and then move to New York to deliver a keynote speech at the United Nations General Assembly. Taking advantage of the UN General Assembly, he will hold bilateral summit meetings with the United States and Japan, respectively, and also hold a summit meeting in Canada, the final country on his tour.
Kim Tae-hyo, the first deputy director of the National Security Office, introduced President Yoon’s schedule for the UK, US, and Canada tour from the 18th to the 24th during a briefing at the Yongsan Presidential Office on the 15th, explaining, "It has been agreed to hold the South Korea-US summit and South Korea-Japan summit at the UN General Assembly, and the timing is currently being coordinated." A senior official from the Presidential Office added, "Due to the tight schedule, the meetings will be face-to-face and last about 30 minutes."
The South Korea-US summit will take place four months after US President Joe Biden’s visit to South Korea, and the South Korea-Japan summit will be the first in 2 years and 10 months since the bilateral meeting between former President Moon Jae-in and former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the South Korea-China-Japan summit held in Chengdu, China, in December 2019. A Presidential Office official explained about the South Korea-US summit, "It will be a meeting to concretize the implementation plans developed by related ministries since the last summit and to identify and reach consensus on more important issues." Regarding the South Korea-Japan summit, the official said, "Both sides readily agreed that it would be good to meet this time," adding, "The topics to be discussed have not yet been decided."
At the UN General Assembly, President Yoon will deliver a speech as the 10th speaker on the first day, the 20th (local time). The keywords for the UN General Assembly visit are freedom solidarity, economic security, and contribution diplomacy. Deputy Director Kim said, "The three keywords that run through the entire tour schedule are broadly uniting freedom in the global community, expanding economic security, and expanding contribution diplomacy in all areas going forward."
A meeting with UN Secretary-General Ant?nio Guterres is also scheduled. This meeting will involve in-depth discussions on regional and international issues including the North Korean problem and ways to strengthen South Korea-UN cooperation. Meetings with political, business, and academic figures, as well as with compatriots, will continue. On the evening of the 21st, President Yoon will attend a reception hosted by US President Joe Biden at the American Museum of Natural History. Following this, the Korea-US Startup Summit is planned, aimed at promoting the entry of Korean startup companies into the US market and attracting US companies to South Korea.
On the 22nd and 23rd in Canada, President Yoon will visit Toronto, the largest economic city and a leader in AI technology, to hold discussions with world-renowned AI scholars. In Ottawa, a summit meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is scheduled. This will be the second meeting following the South Korea-Canada summit held during the NATO summit in June. Both sides plan to discuss ways to deepen the strategic partnership in celebration of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations next year.
