"Impact on Natural Environment and Residents' Living Environment"
[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Namyangju City, Gyeonggi Province, announced on the 14th that "after reviewing the waste disposal business plan submitted by Company A for Onam-eup, it was judged to have a significant impact on the natural environment and residents' living environment, and thus a 'disapproval decision' was made."
Namyangju City explained the reason for the 'disapproval' decision, stating, "Company A is a large-scale facility that processes a large amount of waste cooking oil. In the event of natural disasters, fires, or explosions during facility operation, there is a possibility of a large-scale oil spill accident. If oil flows into Onamcheon, which is connected to the Han River water source, irreversible major disasters such as water pollution and damage to residents are expected."
It added, "Air pollution, odors, and noise may affect nearby residential complexes and elementary schools, and due to the structure of the access road on a steep downhill section, there are concerns about traffic accidents."
The city previously received the business plan from Company A in May and conducted on-site investigations, legal reviews, and technical review committee deliberations by sector.
The review of the appropriateness of the business plan is a legal procedure prior to approval and includes ▲compliance with laws and regulations ▲appropriateness of the waste disposal facility location ▲facilities, equipment, and technical capabilities in the business plan ▲whether water quality deterioration occurs in the water source protection area ▲compliance with environmental standards ▲impact on human health and surrounding environment.
Meanwhile, the city is considering revising the 'Namyangju City Urban Planning Ordinance' to protect the natural environment and ensure a pleasant and safe living environment for citizens.
