From Singapore to Germany! ... Dongseo University Selected as Best of Best at the 'Red Dot Award'

From Singapore to Germany! ... Dongseo University Selected as Best of Best at the 'Red Dot Award' Students from Dongseo University are taking a group commemorative photo after winning a total of 11 Winners at the Reddot Award.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Duyul] Students from Dongseo University won a total of 11 Winners at the 2022 Red Dot Award, one of the world's top three design awards.

Among the awarded works, the piece titled ‘Touchable Hair’ was also selected as ‘Best of the Best,’ an honor given only to the top 1% of entries.

Dongseo University was consecutively selected for Best of the Best with the ‘Goodnight Mommy’ work at the Singapore Red Dot Award and the ‘Touchable Hair’ work at the German Red Dot Award this year.

The Red Dot Award, which began in 1955 in Berlin, Germany, is the longest-running and largest-scale competition worldwide.

In the 2022 contest, about 8,000 works were submitted from over 50 countries worldwide, and 24 of the world's top creators conducted a fair evaluation.

Dongseo University students proudly competed against approximately 8,000 works from global creators and achieved the distinction of 11 Winners, including Best of the Best.

The awarded works are the results of Dongseo University's ‘Ideation Convergence Practice’ class, which has produced a total of 28 award-winning works at the Red Dot Award over eight years since 2015.

The ‘Touchable Hair’ selected as Best of the Best breaks the prejudice that visually impaired people are not interested in their appearance because they cannot see.

In reality, visually impaired individuals often rely on companions' opinions or receive only simple haircuts during beauty services, making it difficult to express their own personality.

The ‘Touchable Hair Catalog’ aims to create a world where the choice of hairstyle is not limited by visual impairment by producing a three-dimensional hair catalog using a 3D printer.

Visually impaired people can understand the shape of hairstyles through the three-dimensional hair catalog and also learn the names of the hairstyles in Braille.

The ‘Touchable Hair’ project involved students Lee Hong, Kim Junhyun, Kim Taehwan, Han Sujeong, and Kang Dongho.

Kim Junhyun, a student in the Department of Software, said, “Design was unfamiliar and not easy, but I am very happy to have achieved meaningful results by working hard with great teammates.”

The awarded works will be listed in the 2022/2023 Red Dot Brand & Communications Yearbook and introduced worldwide through online and permanent exhibitions.

Each awardee will be registered as a Red Dot International Member and receive various benefits, and the Best of the Best works will be permanently exhibited at the Red Dot Museum in Berlin, Germany.

The Red Dot Design Award ceremony, gala show, and exhibition of winning works are scheduled to be held in Berlin on October 28, and all awardees plan to attend the Berlin ceremony.
