[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 14th that it will expand support for social insurance premiums to strengthen the social safety net for one-person self-employed workers.
As part of the '100-Day Livelihood Measures' to assist one-person self-employed workers struggling with recent high interest rates, high oil prices, and high inflation, the city secured additional budget in the supplementary budget in August.
The support targets one-person self-employed workers located in Gwangju who are currently (newly) enrolled in employment insurance or industrial accident insurance.
From September, the support for employment insurance and industrial accident insurance premiums, which was previously 30% for up to three years, will be expanded to 50%. Existing beneficiaries will receive retroactive support without a separate application.
Applications can be made through the Gwangju Economic and Employment Promotion Agency system. By simply entering the insurance premium support application form and consent form for information provision, the applicant's insurance enrollment and payment status will be verified through the Korea Workers' Compensation and Welfare Service, and the amount will be deposited quarterly into the business account.
Song Gwonchun, the city's Economic Policy Officer, said, "We have expanded support for social insurance premiums to prepare for management crises such as business closure or work-related accidents for one-person self-employed workers," and added, "We hope many local one-person self-employed workers who are struggling due to the economic downturn will take advantage of this."
