Praying for the Eternal Peace of the Eighteen Noble Spirits Who Sacrificed in 2003
Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam held the 19th anniversary memorial service for the victims of Typhoon Maemi at the Typhoon Maemi Memorial Park in Haeun-dong, Masanhappo-gu.
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Song Jong-gu] Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam announced that the 19th anniversary memorial service for the victims of Typhoon Maemi was held on the 12th at 10:30 AM at the Typhoon Maemi Memorial Park in Haeun-dong, Masanhappo-gu, Changwon City, with about 100 attendees including Yoo Bong-yong, Chairman of the Typhoon Maemi Memorial Scholarship Foundation, Kim Su-gwon, Chairman of the Typhoon Maemi Bereaved Families Association, Ahn Byung-oh, Mayor of Masanhappo-gu, along with bereaved families and citizens.
This year's memorial service, unlike last year due to the easing of COVID-19 social distancing measures, saw many citizens solemnly praying for the repose of the victims. The event proceeded in the order of scholarship awards to local elementary, middle, and high school students, presentation of plaques of appreciation, memorial speeches, greetings from bereaved family representatives, flower offerings, and memorial performances.
On September 12, 2003, Typhoon Maemi was a super typhoon that broke all previous typhoon records. The rising water level of Masan Bay and the resulting tsunami caused flooding in coastal lowlands, claiming 18 precious lives and causing severe damage.
Mayor Ahn said, “Although time passes, the sorrow that cannot be forgotten remains. I thank the Memorial Scholarship Foundation, the Bereaved Families Association, and everyone who supports these efforts for holding the annual memorial service and scholarship projects.” He added, “No one is free from natural disasters, but we will do our best to prepare for natural disasters by carefully checking even the smallest details so that tragic losses like those during Typhoon Maemi never happen again.”
