724 Street Trees on Banpodaero, Seocho-daero, and Bangbae-ro Pruned with 'Square Pruning'... 5th Year Since 2018 to Create a Landmark Like France's Champs-?lys?es with Unique Attractions
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] The street trees in the Seocho-gu area are catching the eyes of pedestrians and drivers with their neatly aligned, square-shaped appearance, resembling urban artworks.
Seocho-gu (Mayor Jeon Seongsu) announced on the 12th that it has completed square pruning on 724 honey locust street trees along a total of 6.8 km, including Banpodaero.
The district’s ‘Square Pruning Project,’ now in its fifth year since 2018, is characterized by organizing the trees into standardized square shapes inspired by the Champs-?lys?es in Paris, France, maintaining the street trees at consistent intervals and heights.
The pruning sections include ▲ Seocho-daero (Seocho 1-gyo to Seocho Station, 1.3 km) ▲ Banpodaero (Gyodae Entrance Intersection to Banpo Bridge Junction, 2.7 km) ▲ Bangbae-ro (Intersection in front of Gyeongnam Apartment to Intersection in front of Bangbae Samho Apartment, 2.8 km).
This project leverages the fast-growing nature of honey locust trees by shaping them into squares to maintain a consistent height, resolving safety issues such as blocking traffic lights, traffic signs, and overhead wires, while also enhancing the urban aesthetic.
The district expects this project to promote healthy growth by balancing the underground roots and above-ground branches of the street trees and to prevent damage caused by typhoons and other factors.
Seocho-gu Mayor Jeon Seongsu said, “We will continue to create beautiful and dignified tree-lined streets, providing residents with refreshing and distinctive sights, and carry out administration that brings happiness to daily life.”
