[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] “Today, I am greeting you for the first time like this, and I will visit regularly from now on to check if anyone here is experiencing any inconveniences.”

Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, visited Dungji Goshiwon located in Cheongnyangni-dong, Dongdaemun-gu, shaking hands with each resident and warmly greeting them.

As the COVID-19 situation prolongs and single-person households increase, the number of vulnerable households is also rising, leading to growing calls for restructuring the existing welfare system.

On the morning of the 8th, ahead of the Chuseok holiday, Mayor Lee visited Dungji Goshiwon to check the living conditions of low-income single-person households and listened attentively to voices from the field.

Additionally, the district delivered 108 boxes of cup noodles sponsored by Dongdaemun Central Saemaeul Geumgo (Chairman Joo Jeong) and ‘Chuseok Love Hope Boxes’ containing apples, pears, and seaweed sponsored by the Kyungdong Market Youth Mall No Brand to 54 residents of Dungji Goshiwon.

Currently, 54 people reside in Dungji Goshiwon located within Cheongnyangni Traditional Market, of whom 37 are basic livelihood security recipients, mostly living in difficult circumstances.

Going forward, the district plans to identify the living conditions of middle-aged single-person households residing in vulnerable residential areas such as goshiwons, multi-family housing clusters, and semi-basement one-room apartments to discover at-risk and vulnerable households and connect them with public and private services to eliminate welfare blind spots.

Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, “A small interest in neighbors can be a great comfort and hope for life to those who are marginalized. As we approach the nation’s biggest holiday, Chuseok, warm attention and affection from the local community are needed for neighbors facing economic and psychological difficulties. Dongdaemun-gu will continue to proactively identify at-risk households, guarantee basic living, and conduct field-based administration to prevent solitary deaths among socially isolated households.”
