[Asia Economy Kim Gun-chan, Intern Reporter] The body of a woman in her 60s who went missing in Jeju last October was found in Japanese waters about 300km away.

According to KBS on the 2nd, Lee Jun-hee (66), a resident who went missing on October 27 last year on Jeju Olle Course 5, was found in Japan.

Reports state that Lee went missing after leaving her home in Namwon-eup, Seogwipo City. Her last known whereabouts were near Mangjang Port on the Olle Trail. The police requested cooperation from the fire department, coast guard, special forces, and marines to conduct a large-scale search operation. Helicopters, search dogs, drones, and divers were deployed, but no trace of Lee was found.

Then, in May, the National Police Agency received an international cooperation request from Japan Interpol. They requested DNA analysis to identify a deceased person found at Takashima Port in Matsuura City, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan.

The body was discovered and reported by a fisherman at Takashima Port in December last year. The port is located nearly 300km in a straight line from the place where she went missing.

The police analyzed the DNA and dental structure of Lee’s family to confirm kinship and handed over the body to the bereaved family 11 months after the missing person report.
