[Asia Economy Reporter Minyoung Cha] Relevant government ministries gathered to uphold the ‘right to be forgotten’ for victims of digital sex crimes.


On the 1st, five ministries including the Korea Communications Commission, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, Prosecutor’s Office, and National Police Agency held the first meeting of the inter-agency council at the Government Complex Gwacheon to guarantee the ‘right to be forgotten’ for victims of digital sex crimes, a government national agenda.


This meeting, mainly attended by mid-level officials from each ministry, was held to review the current status of policies related to the deletion support of digital sex crime materials and victim protection by each ministry, and to discuss future tasks.


They shared the progress of each ministry regarding ▲support for deletion of digital sex crime videos ▲prevention of distribution of digital sex crime videos and improvement of victim protection systems ▲response to new types of services such as the metaverse (extended virtual world) ▲protection and support for victims of digital sex crimes ▲prevention education and awareness improvement on digital sex crimes, and discussed the need for collaboration.

Kim Jae-cheol, Director of the User Policy Bureau at the Korea Communications Commission, who chaired the meeting, said, "Since the Nth Room incident, a government-wide digital sex crime eradication plan was established in 2020 and implemented by each ministry, but to effectively respond to increasingly sophisticated digital sex crimes such as the recently occurring so-called ‘El sexual exploitation crime,’ organic cooperation between ministries is necessary."


Director Kim emphasized, "Based on the results agreed upon today, next month we will also form and operate a public-private council that includes high-level inter-agency meetings and platform operators. The government and the private sector will cooperate to further strengthen the prevention and response to digital sex crimes."
