A Newborn with an Umbilical Cord... A Young Man and Woman in Their 20s Abandoning and Leaving, Saying "Can't Raise"

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Du-yeol] A man and woman in their 20s who left a newborn baby with the umbilical cord still attached on the street were arrested by the police.

Busan Saha Police Station announced that on the 31st at 9 a.m., they arrested parents A and B, who abandoned the newborn due to financial difficulties, at their residence in Changwon City, Gyeongnam Province.

According to the police, on the evening of the 30th, a report was received that a newborn had been abandoned on the street near a childcare center in Saha-gu, Busan.

The responding police found the newborn with the umbilical cord still attached, wrapped in a blanket and placed inside a paper bag, and took the baby to the hospital. The newborn is reported to be healthy.

The police confirmed through nearby CCTV that A and B abandoned the child and tracked them down, arresting them in Changwon City, Gyeongnam Province.

It was investigated that A and B, who are cohabiting, gave birth to the child at their residence in Changwon on the evening of the 30th.

A police official stated, "It appears they abandoned the child because they were not confident in raising the baby due to financial problems," and added, "We cannot disclose further details."

Abandoning an infant is punishable by up to 2 years imprisonment or a fine of up to 3 million won. If abandonment causes injury to the infant, the penalty is up to 7 years imprisonment, and if it results in death, the penalty is imprisonment for 3 years or more.
