[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yongsan-gu (Mayor Park Hee-young) has established a 360° VR Safe Road View guidance system and launched the first-ever public service of its kind in Seoul.
The 360° VR Safe Road View is a system that provides on-site information about areas with inconvenient passage such as roads where vehicles cannot pass, dead-end streets, and stair roads.
Since services like Naver Map and Kakao Map mainly provide road view services focused on major roads, this system was developed to address blind spots in road view coverage.
An official from the district office explained, “To build the system, public officials personally walked through every corner of Yongsan-gu to film. This helps citizens easily check stairways and roads inaccessible to vehicles, and also links with the Fire and Disaster Headquarters’ own system to provide on-site information during emergencies.”
The district established the system plan earlier this year and completed a detailed survey of inconvenient passage areas within the district from February to July. Out of about 500 locations, 360° VR footage was taken at 172 sites to build the database. The remaining areas will be continuously filmed and updated.
The 172 sites include ▲44 locations where vehicle passage is impossible ▲71 stair roads ▲57 dead-end roads.
The service is currently provided on the Yongsan-gu Office website linked with the Seoul Real Estate Information Plaza. Clicking the banner on the homepage directs users to the relevant page. In the future, the district plans to share the 360° VR database with the portal site Naver to offer the service on Naver Map as well.
Park Hee-young, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, said, “Given the district’s many alleys, we built the Safe Road View considering residents’ convenience and safety. We will continue to prioritize residents in every small aspect of daily life and create a ‘Smart Safe City Yongsan.’”
The district has made multifaceted efforts to realize a ‘Smart Safe City.’ Last year, through a Ministry of the Interior and Safety contest, it established a ‘Digital-based Safety Management System for Aging Risk Facilities’ to manage blind spots in safety management of local facilities. To create a safe and pleasant living environment, it also built the nation’s first smart sewer monitoring system in 2021, which continuously monitors sewer water levels and measures odor gas concentrations.
Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Jun-hee) has created the ‘Gwanak-gu Tourism Guide Map’ to help easily find local landmarks and tourist attractions and view cultural heritage at a glance.
Through the tourism guide map containing various up-to-date information, the district aims to provide convenience for residents and tourists, promote the district internally and externally, and revitalize local tourism.
The map covers the entire Gwanak-gu area, focusing on major tourist spots such as Gwanaksan Mountain, Nakseongdae Park, Byeolbitnaerincheon Stream, Cultural Platform S1472, and Seoul National University Kyujanggak, as well as public institutions and resident convenience facilities like Gwanak-gu Office, Urban Agriculture Center, and Infant Forest Experience Center.
In addition to the recently popular Sharosugil, the map introduces cultural and tourist facilities such as Seoul Museum of Art Namseoul, Horim Museum, Gwaneumsa Temple, Yaksusa Temple, Gwanak Art Hall, and the Catholic Samsung Mountain Holy Site.
It also highlights historical sites related to General Gang Gam-chan, a representative Goryeo military commander of Gwanak, such as his birthplace and the Shinrim-dong Oak Tree, as well as Park Jong-cheol Street, a center of the democratization movement. A detailed map of the expanded Nakseongdae Park, where General Gang was born, was separately produced, showing consideration for users.
Especially, the map includes descriptions of the characteristics and attractions of ten alleyways such as Nokdu Street, Nakseongdae Byeolgil, and Sinsa Matgil, which Gwanak-gu is promoting to revitalize the local economy.
On the back of the map, detailed information and photos are provided about ▲Gang Gam-chan living throughout Gwanak ▲Gwanak-gu’s representative festivals ▲Gwanak Democracy Road ▲major tourist attractions and historical cultural heritage in Gwanak-gu.
The newly introduced ‘Gwanak-gu Tourism Guide Map’ uses the district’s mascot character ‘Gang Gam-chan’ to prominently display key information and is praised for its friendly illustrations that make it easy to understand at a glance.
The tourism guide map is produced in a convenient foldable format and will be distributed to major tourist sites, cultural facilities, and public institutions within the district. It can also be downloaded from the Gwanak-gu Office website.
Mayor Park Jun-hee said, “The newly produced tourism guide map will serve as a good guide to easily find Gwanak-gu’s hidden tourist spots. We hope many tourists will visit Gwanak-gu, enjoy village trips in daily life, and thereby contribute to revitalizing the local economy.”
Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yoo Sung-hoon) announced that it will hold a science festival from September 1 to 4 under the slogan ‘Geumcheon’s Future, Opening the Door to Sustainable Science!’
This event was planned to provide residents with opportunities to directly experience 4th Industrial Revolution technologies, expand the infrastructure of the science city Geumcheon, and nurture talent in advanced science and technology fields.
Various science experience events will be held at Geumcheon-gu Office Plaza, Geumnarae Central Park area, and Geumcheon Science Cube. The district will also operate a dedicated website to allow online participation with a sense of presence. During the festival, visitors can access the metaverse through the website and enjoy the unique online event space of the Geumcheon Science Festival. The metaverse hall will continuously operate booths such as the National Gwacheon Science Museum, Science Quiz Show, Geumcheon Science World, and experience and exhibition halls.

In the experience zone, students from the Geumcheon Youth Science Club will directly operate various creative science programs such as ▲3D printer experience ▲large 4D frame ▲energy playground ▲mini solar panel making, all free of charge.
Additionally, on September 3 at 5:30 p.m., a special lecture titled ‘The Strange Future of the Earth’ by climate environment expert Professor Jong-seong Kook of Pohang University of Science and Technology is scheduled on the main stage at Geumcheon-gu Office Plaza, and creative science programs will be held at Geumcheon Science Cube.
Geumcheon-gu will thoroughly disinfect all event venues and operate indoor experience events such as those at Geumcheon Science Cube by prior reservation to minimize crowd density.
Moreover, participants who complete eight experiences and collect stamps during the event will be entered into a draw to receive gifticons. Various other prize events such as review photo certifications and the Geumcheon Science Quiz Show are also prepared.
Mayor Yoo Sung-hoon said, “Without scientific thinking and perspectives, it is difficult to engage in social activities in the 4th Industrial Revolution era. Starting with this science festival, we will strengthen the scientific capabilities of not only students but also residents, continuously discover scientific resources, and enhance the status of Geumcheon as a science city.”
Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jung Won-oh)’s ‘Relocation Project of Utility Poles Causing Passage Inconvenience’ was recognized for its contribution to creating a safe school commute environment and received a commendation from the Board of Audit and Inspection (BAI) Chairman.
At the 74th anniversary ceremony of the BAI held on August 26, the ‘Relocation Project of Utility Poles Causing Passage Inconvenience’ was recognized as a model case and awarded the BAI Chairman’s commendation.
The BAI conducted a regular audit of Seongdong-gu’s institutional operations over a month last year and identified the project as an excellent case of proactive administration, where the district’s willingness to resolve conflicts persuaded stakeholders and secured cooperation.
The project was selected for the commendation for significantly alleviating residents’ passage inconvenience and contributing to the creation of a safe school commute environment.
Previously, complaints requesting utility pole relocation due to passage inconvenience were difficult to resolve because of complex interests involving relocation sites and cost burdens among multiple agencies. However, since 2019, Seongdong-gu has actively promoted the utility pole maintenance project, becoming the first in the nation to sign a public-private cooperation MOU with Korea Electric Power Corporation and KT, drawing attention as a public-private win-win cooperation model.
The district is conducting a five-year project through 2023 to maintain a total of 150 utility poles around school routes. So far, 110 poles have been relocated, and the remaining 40 poles are planned to be relocated by next year. The utility pole relocation project initiated by Seongdong-gu has received great support from residents and attracted participation from related agencies, saving a budget of 467 million KRW.
Mayor Jung Won-oh of Seongdong-gu said, “This commendation is the result of the district’s passion and dedication to prioritize resolving residents’ inconveniences and ensuring safety by relocating utility poles that obstruct passage. We will continue to listen carefully to every inconvenience of residents and carry out proactive administration for an inclusive city, Seongdong.”
