[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Lee Gijae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu (far left), gave an on-site briefing to President Yoon Seok-yeol (center) on the afternoon of the 23rd during his visit to the Sinwol-dong Deep Underground Rainwater Tunnel (underground storage facility).

On this day, President Yoon, who conducted a focused inspection of the facility's operational status and functions along with Mayor Lee, instructed to establish a flood forecasting and warning system using advanced science and technology and to expand water disaster prevention infrastructure to prepare a long-term flood control plan.

The Sinwol-dong Rainwater Storage and Drainage Facility, with a storage capacity of 320,000 tons, is the first underground storage facility in Korea. During heavy rains, it stores rainwater from nearby areas such as Sinwol-dong and Hwagok-dong and discharges it into the Anyangcheon Stream through a pumping station after the rain stops. Since the facility began operation in 2020, the scale of flood damage in the Sinwol-dong area of Yangcheon-gu, which had repeatedly suffered from flooding, has drastically decreased.

The support boxes included health porridge, convenient meal rice bowls, coffee sets, and patches. The district community centers plan to deliver daily necessities boxes worth a total of 20 million KRW to 650 elderly people aged 65 or older who are basic livelihood security recipients or vulnerable seniors.
