Gwangyang Steelworks Hosts 2022 Equipment Division Maintenance Skills Competition

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] POSCO Gwangyang Steelworks (Director Lee Jin-su) announced that it held a maintenance skills competition to enhance the job capabilities of low-tenure employees in the equipment division.

The equipment division at Gwangyang Steelworks recently organized this competition to strengthen the technical skills of the younger generation of employees, who are expected to become next-generation maintenance experts, as a full-scale generational shift is underway within the organization to maintain world-class equipment competitiveness.

Accordingly, a total of 176 employees in the equipment division with less than five years of tenure participated in the team category, which evaluated two events: ▲Centering and △Reducer Adjustment, and in the individual category, which consisted of five events: ▲Welding ▲Precision Measurement & Sketching ▲Heavy Object Movement ▲Pneumatic Circuit ▲Sequence Control, showcasing their maintenance performance skills honed on-site.

In particular, these employees attracted attention by dedicating themselves fully to preparing for the competition, utilizing time outside of work hours to receive theoretical and practical training from in-house technical experts and conducting autonomous practice sessions.

After fierce competition, the Central Repair Section of the Equipment Technology Department won the top prize in the team category, while Park Woo-jun and Jo Jin-woo from the Rolling Equipment Department and Na Mideum, Kim Chang-yong, and Koo Min-jun from the Steelmaking Equipment Department were honored with the highest awards in the individual category.

Kim Jin-san, an employee of the Central Repair Section who won the top prize in the team event, said, “It was a great opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of maintenance work. I believe I can now approach on-site maintenance management with confidence.”

Go Chan-ju, head of the Equipment Department, commented during the review, “Maintenance skills are one of the core competencies of manufacturing. As the number of low-tenure employees increases, the transfer of core maintenance skills is more important than ever. Please focus on improving employees’ job capabilities through systematic educational programs, including competitions.”

Meanwhile, the equipment division at Gwangyang Steelworks plans to hold a maintenance subcontractor skills competition in September and will strive to enhance the job capabilities of all maintenance personnel at Gwangyang Steelworks, including directly employed staff.
