[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jung Won-oh) is recruiting companies to participate in the Seongsu Popcorn ‘Pop-up Store’ event and the ‘Season Box’ exhibition, officially operated from September at the Seongsu Industrial Culture Complex Theme Space.

Seongdong-gu, which has been promoting the Seongsu Popcorn (‘Pop’up Store + mini ‘Con’cert) event to support local small business owners affected by the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, completed a two-month pilot operation targeting tenants of the Seongsu Handmade Shoes joint sales center and plans to expand participating companies and operate in earnest from September.

The number of companies that can participate in the pop-up store is a total of 20 to 25 companies by the end of the year. The event will be held twice a month (on the 1st and 3rd Friday to Sunday of each month) from September to December at Theater SS space on the 2nd floor of Seongsu Station within the Seongsu Industrial Culture Complex Theme Space.

Each session can accommodate 2 to 3 companies, allowing them to sell and promote their products for three days. The participation fee per session (space usage fee) is 50,000 KRW per company.

In addition, about 2 to 5 companies will be recruited to participate in the ‘Season Box’ exhibition. Selected companies will have the opportunity to exhibit and promote their products quarterly for three months in the Season Box space (approximately 0.6 pyeong) outside the Theater SS space on the 2nd floor of Seongsu Station within the Seongsu Industrial Culture Complex Theme Space.

Companies that have participated in the pop-up store cannot participate again within six months from the participation date, and selling products from other companies besides their own is prohibited. Interested companies can apply by referring to the announcement posted on the Seongdong-gu website.

The ‘Seongsu Popcorn’ event operates a pop-up store featuring local fashion companies alongside mini concerts (busking performances). It provides performance stages for young artists and offers residents opportunities to enjoy various genres of cultural arts, aiming to spread a lifestyle-oriented performance culture.

Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “I hope this event, prepared to support sales channels, will provide small business owners participating with opportunities to sell and promote innovative and competitive products,” adding, “I look forward to Seongsu Station transforming into a new space where local industry coexists with culture and arts.”

Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) will operate the ‘2022 Resident Technology School (2nd term)’ starting mid-September in collaboration with the Social Cooperative Dongsagyeong Center (CEO Choi Geun-young) to provide job creation opportunities for residents through practical skill education.

The Resident Technology School is a technical education program launched to provide job creation opportunities for residents and expand jobs that can maintain local community safety, responding to the increased need for job concepts and strategies due to the worsening employment issues after COVID-19.

The first term of the Resident Technology School was held in June with three courses: Basic Childcare Service, Basic Cleaning Service, and Basic Housing Support Service, producing a total of 23 graduates on the 10th of this month amid positive feedback from students.

Building on the success of the first term, the second term starting mid-September will offer ▲ Basic Cleaning Service Course and ▲ Basic Housing Support Service Course.

The Basic Cleaning Service Course covers cleaning and organizing/storage, including cleaning detergents and chemicals, home cleaning, kitchen and wardrobe organization/storage. In the latter part of the course, on-site practical training visits will be conducted. This practical training, linked with the Korea Cleaning Cooperative, aims to provide education that helps with actual employment and entrepreneurship.

The Basic Housing Support Service Course consists of simple home repair and wallpaper/flooring courses, covering basic tool usage, sink faucet replacement, gas boiler heating management, electrical work, and wallpaper/flooring education. This course will be conducted as practical classes linked with the home repair project group ‘Haetteuneun Jip’ to enable immediate field deployment.

Notably, this Resident Technology School plans to establish a public interest cooperative-type local management company composed of graduates to systematically support their employment and entrepreneurship, drawing attention for its practical approach.

Each course recruits 15 participants, with applications open until the 26th of this month. For more details, inquiries can be made through the Social Cooperative Dongsagyeong Center website or by phone.

Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, “This Resident Technology School will be conducted as a more beneficial technical education program reflecting the know-how of the first term, and we plan to support practical employment and entrepreneurship further,” adding, “We will continue to develop various technical education programs reflecting residents’ needs.”
