Reopened 'Gwanghwamun Square' Foot Traffic Up 42% in a Week... Seoul City Introduces 8 Photo Spots


[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] It has been over two weeks since Gwanghwamun Square reopened, and the floating population around Gwanghwamun Square has significantly increased compared to before its reopening.


According to Seoul City on the 19th, as of the official reopening day of Gwanghwamun Square on the 6th, the floating population around Gwanghwamun Square was 27,971, a 42% increase compared to 19,770 on the previous Saturday. On the following weekend, the 13th, it increased by 11% compared to July 30.


Seoul City introduced eight photo spots throughout the expanded Gwanghwamun Square, which is more than twice as large as before. The eight spots are ▲ Admiral Yi Sun-sin statue viewed from the ‘Plaza Forest’ ▲ Gwanghwamun seen from inside the ‘Tunnel Fountain’ ▲ Certification shots of the 28 letters of Hunminjeongeum hidden throughout the square ▲ Gwanghwamun and Bugaksan Mountain viewed from the ‘Garden of Time’ ▲ The panoramic view of the square while walking along the ‘Historical Water Path’ ▲ The ‘Hangul Fountain’ resembling the Squid Game logo ▲ Gwanghwamun Square viewed from the shade of the Zelkova tree ▲ The night view of the square presented by the dazzling lights and videos of media art.

Meanwhile, since the opening ceremony on the 6th, Seoul City has held large-scale cultural performances such as the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra’s 77th Liberation Day concert, as well as historical events like tours of Gyeongbokgung and Deoksugung Palaces. Until the end of September, Seoul City plans to hold music concerts by city art groups, cinema concerts, and lifestyle sports events including taekwondo, basketball, and aerobics.


Yeo Jang-kwon, Head of the Balanced Development Headquarters, said, “Although it was difficult to fully showcase the planned events and facilities due to heavy rain after the reopening of Gwanghwamun Square, the number of visitors to the square continues to increase,” adding, “We hope visitors create wonderful memories and take great photos at Gwanghwamun Square, which is like a park in the city center filled with various attractions and things to enjoy.”
