'Munjong Yoon, accused of hiring favoritism, loses damages suit against Ha Tae-kyung and Shim Jae-chul'

[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] Moon Jun-yong, son of former President Moon Jae-in, lost the first trial in a damages lawsuit he filed against former Liberty Korea Party (predecessor of the People Power Party) lawmaker Shim Jae-cheol and People Power Party lawmaker Ha Tae-kyung, who raised allegations of his preferential hiring.

The Civil Division 15 of the Seoul Southern District Court (Presiding Judge Lee Jin-hwa) dismissed the plaintiff's claim on the 18th in the damages lawsuit in which Moon claimed 80 million KRW each against former lawmaker Shim and lawmaker Ha.

The court partially accepted claims related to former lawyer Jeong Jun-gil, who was then the head of the Gwangjin-eul district committee of the Liberty Korea Party, and claims against Lee Yu-mi and six others, who were members of the now-dissolved People's Party in 2018. Lee Yu-mi was sentenced to one year in prison in 2018 for fabricating information related to Moon's preferential hiring allegations.

In 2018, during the 19th presidential election, Moon filed a lawsuit seeking 80 million KRW in damages against former lawmaker Shim, lawmaker Ha, lawyer Jeong, and others who raised allegations of preferential hiring against him.

During the trial, Moon argued that his hiring was found not to be preferential during an investigation by the National Assembly's Environment and Labor Committee into the Ministry of Employment and Labor in 2007, when former President Moon served as Chief of Staff at the Blue House.

In response, former lawmaker Shim said, "Kwon Jae-cheol, then head of the Korea Employment Information Service, repeatedly committed perjury at the National Assembly and covered up the hiring allegations," adding, "The institution received an administrative disciplinary action of institutional caution, and three personnel officers responsible for hiring were reprimanded and warned."
