Exported 81 Tons in Less Than a Month in August, Export Plan Until February Next Year
[Gokseong=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Cha Jong-sun] The premium Gokseong pears, the largest export item among fresh agricultural products in Gokseong-gun, Jeollanam-do, are showing success in exports to the United States.
On August 17, Gokseong County Governor and related officials visited the joint sorting center of the Gokseong Pear Agricultural Cooperative Corporation.
This was an event to inspect the export site of premium Gokseong pears and strengthen cooperation with local export companies.
Since early August, Gokseong-gun has been exporting the Wonhwang and Hwanggeum pear varieties to the United States.
So far, approximately 81.6 tons, worth about 325 million KRW, of premium Gokseong pears have been shipped to the U.S.
After Chuseok, the plan is to export the Singo variety until February 2023.
The pears for export are cultivated by member farms of the Gokseong Pear Agricultural Cooperative Corporation (CEO Jeong Bok-gi).
It is known that about 25 member farms export 100% of their production.
The cooperative has established a high-quality competitive edge and a stable distribution system through efficient sorting facility operation and joint sorting by equipping safe and clean GAP-certified facilities.
In particular, based on the designation as a pear export specialized complex by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and certification as an excellent export complex, the pears have been consistently well-received by both domestic and overseas buyers.
Gokseong County Governor Lee Sang-cheol, who visited the site, said, “I thank the farmers who have produced pears well and succeeded in exporting to the U.S. despite the difficulties caused by COVID-19. I hope the premium Gokseong pears will spread worldwide. Furthermore, we will organically strengthen cooperation for stable domestic prices through continuous export expansion and for a happier Gokseong for our residents.”
Gokseong-gun is promoting various export support projects such as export logistics costs and packaging material support for export agricultural products to expand premium pear exports.
Additionally, they are actively addressing difficulties faced by local export companies through administrative efforts such as acquiring overseas certifications that meet export requirements by item, developing export packaging designs, and supporting the purchase of consumable materials for export.
A Gokseong-gun official stated, “Although export conditions are difficult due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, we will do our best to pioneer overseas markets by continuously building export foundations, enhancing quality competitiveness, and promoting strategic local marketing.”
