[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] Legendary Italian actress Gina Lollobrigida has announced her candidacy for the general election at the age of 95.

On the 15th (local time), Lollobrigida expressed her intention to run for the Senate in Italy's early general election in an interview with the Italian daily Corriere della Sera. She said, "I am tired of politicians not getting to the point and only arguing with each other," and added, "I will fight for the people's right to decide on issues ranging from health to justice."

The early general election, scheduled for the 25th of next month, is expected to focus on support or opposition to the policies of Mario Draghi, who announced his resignation. Prime Minister Draghi has maintained a tough stance against Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Lollobrigida is running for the Senate as a member of the 'Italy Sovereign and Popular Party (ISP),' which opposes Draghi.

She explained that she decided to run inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, who led nonviolent civil disobedience against Britain. Previously, Lollobrigida also ran once in the 1999 European Parliament election.

Born in 1927 and recently celebrating her 95th birthday, Lollobrigida has been active in Hollywood since the mid-1950s and gained great popularity as Europe's representative sex symbol. In 1968, she won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for 'Come September,' and after retiring, she worked as a photojournalist and architect. She also attracted attention with an exclusive interview scoop with Cuban communist revolutionary leader Fidel Castro.
