[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] As the members of the Cargo Solidarity Union of the Korean Public Service and Transport Workers' Union (KPTU) continue their occupation of the HiteJinro headquarters for the second day, the police have begun an internal investigation into the legality of their actions.
On the 17th, the Gangnam Police Station in Seoul confirmed that they are reviewing the possibility of applying charges of trespassing in a jointly used building and obstruction of business against the Cargo Solidarity members occupying and protesting inside the HiteJinro headquarters building.
The Cargo Solidarity members occupied the first floor and rooftop of the HiteJinro headquarters starting from the afternoon of the previous day. The police estimate that about 30 to 40 people are on the first floor and around 10 on the rooftop.
On the same day, the Cargo Solidarity and HiteJinro management held negotiations at a nearby police substation mediated by the police, but the talks ended in failure without reaching an agreement. The management is reportedly considering filing complaints against the union members for obstruction of business and other charges.
Meanwhile, the Cargo Solidarity plans to hold a large-scale rally on the road in front of the HiteJinro headquarters around 2 p.m. on the 18th. Approximately 1,000 people are expected to attend this rally. Additionally, a press conference urging the resolution of the HiteJinro rooftop protest will be held in front of the Yongsan Presidential Office.
