According to Seoul Metropolitan Government and other local governments, from midnight to 9 PM on the same day, 175,765 people across 17 cities and provinces nationwide were confirmed positive for COVID-19. This is 94,102 more than the previous day's count at the same time (81,663). This is the highest number since April 12, 125 days ago, as of 9 PM.
Typically, due to a decrease in diagnostic testing over the weekend, confirmed cases increase during weekdays and tend to decrease toward the end of the week and weekends.
Since there is still time until midnight when the count is finalized, the number of new confirmed cases announced on the 17th is expected to increase further.
As of 9 PM on the day, confirmed cases were 87,371 in the metropolitan area and 88,394 in non-metropolitan areas. By region, Gyeonggi had 45,791 cases, Seoul 32,523, Gyeongnam 12,723, Incheon 9,057, Busan 9,018, Daegu 8,486, Gyeongbuk 7,541, Jeonnam 7,509, Chungnam 7,123, Jeonbuk 6,296, Daejeon 6,177, Chungbuk 5,724, Gwangju 5,400, Gangwon 5,176, Ulsan 3,877, Sejong 1,548, and Jeju 1,796.
