[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Starting from the afternoon of the 14th, rain will fall, with heavy showers expected mainly in the Seoul metropolitan area and Gangwon Province until the afternoon of August 15, which is both Liberation Day and Malbok (the last of the three hottest periods in summer).


As of 5 PM on the 14th, temperatures in major cities were recorded as follows: Seoul 30.3°C, Gwangju 31.1°C, Daejeon 28.2°C, Daegu 33.3°C, Ulsan 32.6°C, and Busan 29.5°C. Rain is forecasted in the northern Chungnam region from 6 PM until midnight.


The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) advised caution as strong gusts and heavy showers accompanied by thunder and lightning may occur mainly in the Seoul metropolitan area and Gangwon Province until the afternoon of August 15, which is both Liberation Day and Malbok. By region, showers are expected from midnight to 3 AM in central and northern Chungbuk and the Gyeongbuk area, and from noon to 3 PM in the Seoul metropolitan area and Gangwon Province.


Expected rainfall amounts are 10 to 60 mm in the Seoul metropolitan area, inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon, northern Chungnam, central and northern Chungbuk, and the Gyeongbuk area, with 80 mm or more expected in northern Gyeonggi and northwestern inland Gangwon.

Especially from late afternoon on the 15th, rain will fall across most regions nationwide. Between 3 PM and 6 PM, rain is expected in the Seoul metropolitan area and Gangwon Province, and from 6 PM until midnight the next day, rain will fall in the Chungcheong region and northern Gyeongbuk. The expected rainfall from late afternoon on the 15th through the 16th is forecasted to be 30 to 100 mm nationwide, with 150 mm or more in eastern Gyeonggi, Chungcheong, Jeonbuk, and western Gyeongbuk.


Meanwhile, the KMA issued heavy rain warnings and advisories in various areas this afternoon. A heavy rain warning was issued for Yongin in the Seoul metropolitan area at 5:35 PM. Heavy rain advisories were issued for Icheon, Anseong, Hwaseong, Gwangju, and Yeoju. In Gangwon Province, heavy rain advisories were issued at 5:35 PM for Wonju and Hoengseong. Heavy rain advisories and warnings are issued when the expected rainfall is 60 mm or more and 90 mm or more respectively within 3 hours, or 110 mm or more and 180 mm or more respectively within 12 hours.
