[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] A shooting incident presumed to be a terrorist attack occurred in Jerusalem just one week after the armed conflict between the Israeli military and Palestinian militant groups came to an end.
According to Israeli media on the 14th (local time), in the early morning, an armed assailant opened fire on a bus waiting at a signal in the Old City of Jerusalem. At least seven people were injured in the shooting. A 35-year-old pregnant woman who was shot in the abdomen and a man who sustained gunshot wounds to the head and neck are reported to be in critical condition.
The shooting took place near the Western Wall (also known as the Wailing Wall), the only place in the Old City of Jerusalem? a shared holy site for Islam, Judaism, and Christianity? where Jews are permitted to pray.
The suspect fled toward a Palestinian residential area after the attack but surrendered a few hours after Israeli police began pursuing him. This incident occurred one week after the armed conflict between the Israeli military and the militant group 'Palestinian Islamic Jihad' (PIJ), which lasted three days and was temporarily resolved through Egyptian mediation. During that conflict, 49 people lost their lives and over 300 were injured in the Gaza Strip.
