[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Nayeon] The U.S. Army is developing a tactical bra that female soldiers can wear with their uniforms for the first time since the Army's founding.

According to a recent report by The Washington Post (WP), the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) is pushing forward with the production of four prototypes called the "Army Tactical Bra."

This project began as voices within the military called for recognizing diversity and moving away from the existing male-centered uniform standards, especially after women accounted for 16.5% of U.S. military enlistments in 2018.

The Army Uniform Board (AUB), which manages the procurement of Army clothing, is expected to decide on the official adoption of the bra this fall. If approved by the AUB, it will become the first official military uniform bra issued to female soldiers in Army history.

Army Times, which covers news about the U.S. military and soldiers, reported that the tactical bra will serve as additional protective gear for female soldiers and that the new product will be integrated into body armor as well.

All prototypes are made from flame-resistant materials and have been produced in various styles, including pullovers worn over the head like T-shirts and front-closure designs.

Additionally, considering the high physical activity of female soldiers, the bra includes various features such as ventilation openings and an inner pocket for identification tags.

Ashley Cushon, the designer leading the prototype development, explained in an interview with the U.S. Army magazine "AL&T," "The overall goal is to protect our soldiers who wear underwear while reducing the burden caused by uncomfortable and awkward fit."

Cushon added, "This will allow soldiers to focus solely on their missions, thereby improving overall readiness and performance."

A female Army officer cited breathability as the most important element of the Army Tactical Bra, noting that soldiers often spend many days in the field without being able to wash during operations.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Army and Air Force relaxed strict hair regulations last year by allowing braided hair and ponytails, and the U.S. Navy is currently measuring the bodies of hundreds of female sailors to create new uniforms tailored to their physical characteristics.

The Washington Post interpreted these measures as part of recent efforts within the U.S. military to recognize soldier diversity and improve uniform standards for female soldiers.
