Seoul City to Begin Construction of 'Seoseoul Art Museum' in August, Merging Digital Technology and Art

A digital art museum combining digital technology and art, a landmark in the southwestern region

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Seoul City announced on the 15th that it will begin construction in August with the goal of opening Seoseoul Museum of Art, the first public art museum in the southwestern area, in November 2024. Located within Geumnarae Central Park in front of Geumcheon District Office, Seoseoul Museum of Art will have a total floor area of 7,187㎡, spanning from two basement levels to one above ground.

Seoul City plans to develop Seoseoul Museum of Art, the first public art museum in the southwestern region, into a ‘digital art museum’ that leads future visual culture by establishing a distinctive digitalization strategy as a museum that expands cultural experiences in the digital era.

Since 2020, Seoul City has collected over 40 pieces for Seoseoul Museum of Art’s collection, including Argos by Kim Yoon-chul and Electronic Government by Yang Achi. The collection was gathered through a phased process reflecting curatorial research and expert opinions. This year, 420 works were submitted through theme contests and recommendations from internal and external experts, and the final selection process is currently underway.

From October 4 to October 30, Seoul City will hold a pre-opening program titled Unusual Time, Uncertain Movement at the Seoul Museum of Art. Joo Yong-tae, head of Seoul City’s Culture Headquarters, stated, “Seoseoul Museum of Art, opening in 2024, will become a key cultural landmark of the ‘Digital Sensory Culture City Seoul.’ We hope Seoseoul Museum of Art will be a distinctive cultural space where citizens can enjoy rest, culture, cutting-edge technology, and art all within the park.”
