Strict Prevention Guidelines for High-Risk Groups of Vibrio Sepsis

Patients begin to appear every year in May and June when the seawater temperature rises above 18℃, with cases concentrated especially in August and September during the summer season, requiring strict adherence to preventive measures for high-risk groups.

Vibrio vulnificus infection is a disease accompanied by symptoms such as acute fever, chills, low blood pressure, abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea upon infection, with skin lesions appearing within 24 hours after symptom onset.

It mainly occurs in high-risk groups with underlying conditions such as chronic liver disease, alcoholism, and diabetes, and since the fatality rate can rise up to 50%, it is essential to follow preventive guidelines.

Preventive measures for Vibrio vulnificus infection include thoroughly cooking seafood at temperatures above 85℃, avoiding contact with seawater if you have skin wounds, washing shellfish and seafood thoroughly under running tap water during handling and cooking, sterilizing used cutting boards and knives with boiling water, and wearing gloves when handling seafood.

A county official urged high-risk groups to exercise special caution during the summer when seawater temperatures rise.
