[Jeju=Asia Economy, Hwang Jeongpil, Honam News Bureau] The Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Fire Safety Headquarters (Chief: Park Geuno) and the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Autonomous Police Corps (Chief: Ko Changkyung) have established a collaborative system for clearing the way for fire trucks to secure emergency vehicle golden time, and will officially launch the operation starting August 16.
According to the Jeju Fire Headquarters on August 12, over the past three years (2019-2021), a total of 2,886 patients with cardiac arrest and severe trauma were transported by the 119 emergency medical service in the province. As of the end of June, 497 patients (352 with cardiac arrest and 145 with severe trauma) had been transported to hospitals.
The Jeju Fire Safety Headquarters and the Autonomous Police Corps have established a collaborative system to secure the golden time for emergency patients by escorting 119 ambulances with police motorcycles stationed at major traffic congestion points during the transport of cardiac arrest and severe trauma patients to hospitals.
The 119 Integrated Control Center will transmit patient transport information in real time to the Autonomous Police Corps during emergency transfers, such as cardiac arrest cases. Police motorcycles stationed at key locations will assist ambulances by securing travel routes to ensure rapid hospital transport.
Police motorcycles and patrol cars will be stationed at major congestion points during peak commuting hours, when traffic jams are frequent. On August 4, the Fire Safety Headquarters and the Autonomous Police Corps jointly conducted a test run in these sections, completing preliminary preparations for smooth operation of the collaborative system.
The paramedic who drove the ambulance during the test stated, "The police motorcycle secured the travel route in front of us, which was very helpful," adding, "In particular, I felt a sense of psychological relief when passing through intersections."
Park Geuno, Chief of the Fire Safety Headquarters, said, "We expect that establishing a collaborative system with the Autonomous Police Corps to improve the emergency vehicle dispatch environment will make a significant contribution to securing the golden time for increasing emergency patient survival rates, spreading the culture of yielding to fire trucks, and building a safety infrastructure."
Meanwhile, since February, the Jeju Fire Safety Headquarters has been working with TBN Jeju Traffic Broadcasting to broadcast real-time emergency patient transport information to listeners, encouraging drivers to cooperate in securing emergency vehicle routes and yielding to emergency vehicles.
They also plan to further expand mutual cooperation to improve the emergency vehicle dispatch environment.
