[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] “Thank you, Kim Tae-woo, Mayor of Gangseo District. Thanks to you, my fatigue has completely disappeared, and I feel greatly empowered. I experienced the true spirit of a neighbor who helps wholeheartedly in difficult times.”

Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo District, expressed his gratitude to Kim Tae-woo, Mayor of Gangseo District, who actively assisted in the recovery from heavy rain damage.

Since August 8, Yeongdeungpo District received 363mm of rain. Due to concentrated heavy rain exceeding 110mm per hour, significant damage occurred in areas such as Singil-dong, Daerim-dong, and Mullae-dong. A total of 2,680 households, 30 roads, and 60 vehicles were flooded.

The neighboring local government, Gangseo District, also experienced heavy rainfall. In Gonghang-dong, Gangseo District, 146.3mm of rain fell over two days. Although there was a temporary heavy downpour, the situation was better compared to Yeongdeungpo District.

The district first decided to pump out water from flooded houses to prevent secondary damage. Despite mobilizing all available pumps, it was insufficient. Therefore, support was requested from the adjacent district, Gangseo. On the afternoon of the 9th at 4 p.m., Gangseo District received the request and rushed over with 43 pumps loaded.

Gangseo District’s assistance continued on the 11th as well. After the rain stopped, work began to remove and dry household goods from damaged homes and to dispose of waste. About 1,200 people, including public officials, volunteers, and military personnel, were deployed to support recovery efforts.

The recovery proceeded smoothly, but there was a shortage of vehicles to carry the waste. Mayor Choi directly requested vehicle support again from Mayor Kim of Gangseo District. Upon receiving the request, Gangseo District promptly responded. Within an hour of the request, nine 2.5-ton waste collection vehicles arrived. On that day, the vehicles supported by Gangseo District removed a total of 67.5 tons of waste over three hours.

Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo District, said, “I was surprised that the vehicles arrived in less than an hour after the request,” and expressed his gratitude, “Thanks to the support from Gangseo District Office, we were able to carry out the recovery work quickly.”
