‘Confident’ No Worries About Employment, Public Service Entry OK … Yeongnam Polytechnic College Construction Systems Department Fully Committed to Training Practical Construction Technology Experts Students of the Department of Construction Systems at Yeungnam Polytechnic College are practicing the latest surveying techniques used on construction sites based on practical surveying training using drones.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yeo Jong-gu] A department at a regional university is gaining attention for boldly opening the door to the previously closed job market by nurturing students' talents and aptitudes with the goal of fostering talent in a specific field.

The Construction Systems Department at Yeungnam College of Science and Technology is known for an 80% full-time employment rate in the construction sector (as of 2021) and for being a specialized department training technical civil service officers in civil engineering, earning much envy from surrounding universities.

Since its establishment in 1971 with the aim of cultivating competent professional construction technicians for both local and overseas construction industries, the Construction Systems Department has a long history with over 4,000 graduates.

Moreover, the department boasts top professors with extensive practical experience who conduct lectures focused on fieldwork, providing perfect practice-oriented education that requires no retraining upon entering society, as proven by its graduates.

With excellent practical equipment and the ability to immediately apply academic knowledge learned at the university to the field, Yeungnam College of Science and Technology’s Construction Systems Department is also preferred by companies for training professional construction technicians.

In line with the Fourth Industrial Revolution era, drones are actively used in various fields such as surveying, construction, and safety management at construction sites. They have established a practice room equipped with the latest drones so that students can richly experience both theory and practice and have prepared facilities accordingly.

Furthermore, by inviting external experts to combine theory and practice, the department strengthens education on the latest surveying techniques using drones, including ▲drone surveying theory ▲flight operation ▲filming practice and analysis ▲software practice.

To cultivate top talent equipped with academic knowledge, the department also boasts some of the nation’s best practice labs, including applied mechanics, soil mechanics, surveying, reinforced concrete engineering, hydrology and hydraulics, water supply and sewage engineering, materials laboratory, hydraulic laboratory, CAD lab, and drafting room.

Students improve their skills related to their major through club activities and fieldwork in a voluntary atmosphere, engaging in practical exercises applicable to actual construction sites.

In particular, the department runs ongoing programs for obtaining certifications such as Civil Engineering Industrial Engineer, Surveying, Geospatial Information Industrial Engineer, Construction Materials Industrial Engineer, Concrete Industrial Engineer, Railroad Civil Engineering Industrial Engineer, Construction Safety Industrial Engineer, and Cadastral Industrial Engineer, making it very attractive.

Civil Engineering (土木工學) is famous as a field with no employment worries due to the expansion of national core infrastructure SOC projects and advanced urban planning design.

The use of advanced equipment and the region’s best practical environment have been supported by the Ministry of Education’s Specialized College Innovation Support Project and the LINC 3.0 Project, and a special class for acquiring aviation and water drone certifications is also operated.

Through programs such as the civil engineering technical public officer program, various special lectures on civil engineering industrial engineer certification, CAD, and computing, as well as work-study and adult worker courses, the faculty is making every effort to enhance students’ employment competitiveness.

After graduation, students can advance into various fields such as construction and construction companies, engineering firms, soil investigation and testing companies, construction safety diagnosis companies, technical public officers, public enterprises, and government investment institutions.

Recently, graduates have been leading juniors by advancing into technical public officer positions in Daegu City, Gyeongbuk Province, and across the country, as well as into public enterprises, large corporations, and mid-sized construction companies.

Lee Dong-wook (Class of 2020, Construction Systems Department), a technical public officer in Bonghwa County, said, "The systematic classes and passionate lectures from professors at Yeungnam College of Science and Technology’s Construction Systems Department laid the foundation for me to work in public service today," adding, "I will continue to proudly support my juniors as a proud Yeungnam College alumnus."

Kim Jin-kyu, head of the Construction Systems Department at Yeungnam College of Science and Technology, stated, “We will do our best to nurture professional construction technology talents who are strong in fieldwork and can lead tasks on site through curricula that meet the latest trends of the Fourth Industrial Revolution era.”
