[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Seoyoon] GS Caltex announced on the 11th that it will sponsor the ‘8·15 Run’ to commemorate the 77th anniversary of Liberation Day.
The ‘8·15 Run’ is a charity marathon supporting the descendants of independence activists. It has been held since 2020 by Korea Habitat, a nonprofit housing welfare organization, and singer Sean. The event reflects on the significance of Liberation Day and expresses gratitude to independence activists, delivering a positive message of “It will be alright, Republic of Korea!” Funds raised from individual participation fees and corporate donations are used to improve the housing conditions of the descendants of independence activists.
GS Caltex recruited 402 employees to participate in the ‘8·15 Run’ event. Participating employees can choose a running course of 3.1 km, 4.5 km, or 8.15 km, symbolizing March 1st Movement, 1945, and Liberation Day, respectively, according to their personal ability, and complete the course between the 15th and 31st of this month. GS Caltex will cover the participation fees and additionally donate funds separately for the descendants of independence activists.
GS Group and GS Caltex are actively engaged in activities honoring the spirit of the independence movement and the dedication of independence activists. GS Group’s founder, Heo Man-jeong, participated as a founding member of Baeksan Sanghoe, which served as a fundraising headquarters to support independence fighters operating in Manchuria and Shanghai.
In 2019, to mark the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Korean Provisional Government, GS Caltex conducted the ‘Independence Typeface’ campaign based on GS Group’s ideology of supporting the independence movement. This campaign digitally restored the handwriting of independence activists. The typefaces of patriot Yun Bong-gil, monk Han Yong-un, leader Kim Gu, poet Yun Dong-ju, and patriot Ahn Jung-geun were developed. These typefaces, embodying great spirit and heart, are available for free download so that anyone can reflect on the noble spirit of sacrifice and beautiful hearts dedicated to the country.
A GS Caltex official said, “We are honored to support the descendants of independence activists through the ‘8·15 Run’ that commemorates the spirit of independence activists,” adding, “We will continue to carry on GS Group’s tradition of supporting the independence movement and promote various activities to honor the spirit and dedication of independence activists, striving to become a respected company.”
