[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] On the afternoon of the 10th, Lee Gi-jae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, conducted an on-site inspection and briefed on the response situation together with Prime Minister Han Deok-soo, who visited the Sinwol Rainwater Storage and Drainage Facility.
The Sinwol Rainwater Storage and Drainage Facility, the first large-scale tunnel-type rainwater storage and drainage facility in Korea, can handle heavy rain of 100mm per hour.
The drainage tunnel installed 40 meters underground, with a diameter of 10 meters and a length of 3.6 km, has a storage capacity of 320,000 tons of water, providing excellent drainage performance during heavy rainfall.
Since the installation of this facility, Yangcheon-gu has not experienced serious flooding damage despite record-breaking heavy rains.
Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) deployed 36 recovery personnel and 6 pieces of equipment (2 Bobcats, 2 water trucks, 1 backhoe, 1 dump truck) on the morning of the 10th to remove debris and conduct water cleaning in three rivers: Jungnangcheon, Jeongneungcheon, and Seongbukcheon, as the rain stopped and river levels dropped.
A total of 259.5mm of rain fell in Dongdaemun-gu from the 8th to 7 a.m. on the 10th.
The district has maintained an emergency operation system at the Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters since 7 a.m. on the 8th until now.
The heavy rain caused flooding on the riverbanks of Jungnangcheon, Jeongneungcheon, and Seongbukcheon, but there were no other flood damages or casualties within Dongdaemun-gu.
Prior to this heavy rain, on the afternoon of the 5th, the district conducted pre-inspections of 8 underground pedestrian underpasses, 42 construction sites, and 57 slope facilities including Baebongsan, and re-inspected these facilities on the 8th and 9th to thoroughly prepare for the heavy rain.
On the morning of the 9th, Mayor Lee Pil-hyung visited Jungnangcheon and Baebongsan to check the heavy rain situation.
A district official stated, “We will promptly complete river maintenance so that residents can safely and comfortably use Jungnangcheon, Jeongneungcheon, and Seongbukcheon again.”
