[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Hwang Du-yeol] Dongseo University recently won a silver and a bronze award at the New York Festivals International Advertising Awards, with 11 works shortlisted in 15 categories.
The gold award-winning work Smelly Belt was submitted by students Lee Hong, Jung Yoo-sung, Ha Eun-byeol, Kang Dong-ho, and Bang Seung-yeon, while Goodnight Mommy, which won both silver and bronze awards, was created by students Ahn Chi-hyun, Kang Dong-ho, Park Won-bae, Lee Ji-eun, and Choi Min-sung.
The New York Festivals, established in 1957 and hosted by The New York Festivals IAA in the United States, is considered one of the world's top three advertising awards alongside the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity and the Clio Awards.
The award-winning works were supported by the University Innovation Support Project Group and the SW-Centered University Project Group, and were the result of teamwork between Professor Ryu Do-sang of the Department of Advertising and Public Relations and Professor Moon Mi-kyung of the Department of Software in the ‘Ideation Convergence Practice’ class, one of Dongseo University's convergence education programs.
The gold award-winning ‘Smelly Belt’ was designed to make it easier to find missing persons.
The students proposed an idea to insert a block made of a liquid called thiol inside the belt buckle. Once the buckle is opened, the smell lasts for about a month, allowing rescue dogs to detect the scent from up to 1 km away to locate the missing person.
‘Goodnight Mommy,’ which won both silver and bronze awards, was inspired by the difficulties faced by hearing-impaired parents.
Hearing-impaired parents often suffer from severe sleep disorders due to anxiety over not being able to hear their child's crying while they sleep. To alleviate this inconvenience, the students came up with an idea to recognize the child's crying and send a vibration signal to the pillow of the sleeping hearing-impaired parent.
Bang Seung-yeon, a senior in the Department of Software, said, “I am grateful that the sincere concerns and efforts of the professors and team members who worked hard to turn one idea into a great work led to this award.”
