[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Since the heavy rain concentrated in the central region began on the 8th, 9 people have died and 600 disaster victims from 411 households have occurred in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Gangwon.


According to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters (CDSCH) as of 11 a.m. on the 10th, the casualties were counted as 9 dead (Seoul 5, Gyeonggi 3, Gangwon 1), 7 missing (Seoul 4, Gyeonggi 3), and 17 injured (Gyeonggi). Although deaths occurred in Pyeongchang, Gangwon and Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi, they were not classified as deaths caused by the heavy rain and were excluded from the count.


This heavy rain caused 600 disaster victims from 411 households. The number of temporarily evacuated people due to the heavy rain was investigated to be 1,232 from 718 households. In addition, public facility flooding occurred 16 times in Seoul and Gyeonggi, including 8 cases of embankment collapse, 30 cases of slope collapse, 10 cases of water and sewage facilities, and 14 cases of hydraulic facilities. Flooding of private facilities such as houses and stores totaled 2,682 buildings, with Seoul accounting for 2,419 cases, Gyeonggi 126 cases, Incheon 133 cases, and Gangwon 4 cases.


Furthermore, there were 7 cases of retaining wall collapse and 32 cases of soil runoff, and the flooded area of crops reached 232 hectares. There were 43 power outages, with 37 restored, while restoration work is ongoing in Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi, Gwangju, and Yeoju.


Due to this heavy rain, riverside parking lots, Sewolgyo bridges, trails, and passenger ship routes were also restricted. A total of 27 riverside parking lots, 38 riverside areas, and 14 Sewolgyo bridges were restricted, followed by 226 trails in 8 national parks and 1 passenger ship route being restricted.


Meanwhile, the CDSCH forecasted that with heavy rain warnings issued south of the Seoul metropolitan area, strong rain exceeding 30mm per hour is falling in southern Chungnam and northern Jeonbuk, and that rain of 50 to 80mm per hour accompanied by gusts, thunder, and lightning is expected to continue.
