One of the Parent or Child Must Be an Adult...

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Nowon-gu (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it will hold a special lecture on parental education as part of a social childcare support project using books as a medium.

The lecture is titled "An Era When Parents Also Need Education." This education, prepared for parents struggling with child-rearing and communication, explains the importance of reading during early childhood and presents the proper image of caregivers.

The lectures will be held on August 31, September 7, September 14, and September 28 at 10 a.m. in the auditorium on the 3rd floor of Nowon Children's Library, lasting 1 hour and 30 minutes each.

The speakers include Dr. Jang Dong-seon, Dr. Lim Young-joo, Professor Lim Sung-mi, and Director Lee Im-sook, who are active in various fields including writing and broadcasting.

Dr. Jang Dong-seon, a neuroscientist and science communicator who recently appeared as a fixed member on tvN's "Alssul Sinjab 2," opening the first lecture on August 31, will present the secrets to raising children with happy and creative brains under the theme "What kind of story will you plant in your child's brain?"

The second lecture on September 7 will be conducted by Dr. Lim Young-joo, who has appeared on numerous broadcasts such as EBS "Parents" and KBS "Ask Anything," providing practical alternatives for parents raising children regarding discipline, fatherhood, and sibling conflicts. The lecture titled "One of the Parent or Child Must Be the Adult" will focus on emotional psychology for parents who get angry and regret afterward.

On September 14, Professor Lim Sung-mi from the Graduate School of Education at Catholic University will lecture on "Happy Communication Between Parents and Children, Literacy Development at Home," discussing communication methods through picture books and reading-based childcare to enhance literacy.

Finally, on September 28, Director Lee Im-sook of the Korea Reading Therapy Association, who appeared on EBS "Parent Class" and is the author of the book "Mom's Language Study," will lecture on "The Words of Parents That Change Children."

Applications for the lectures open on August 13 at 10 a.m. via the Nowon-gu Public Library website. The courses are free, and registration is accepted on a first-come, first-served basis for 70 people per session.

Nowon Children's Library, opened in 2003 as the first local government specialized children's library, completed expansion and remodeling in December 2019. It operates various programs for different target groups, and last year, it conducted over 120 programs including customized book recommendation programs and reading camps, with about 4,800 participants.

Mayor Oh Seung-rok said, "I hope this special lecture will be an opportunity for children and parents to understand each other and grow closer," adding, "The library will no longer be just a place to read books but a cultural space where all generations communicate, and we will offer various programs to achieve this."

Yangcheon-gu (Mayor Lee Ki-jae) announced that it is publicly recruiting locations for the installation of the "Yangcheon-gu Our Neighborhood Care Center," which provides safe after-school care services near the living area for local elementary school students.

Our Neighborhood Care Center is a social welfare facility that provides regular and temporary care (including meals, snacks, and special activity programs) for elementary school students aged 6 to 12 regardless of income level. Yangcheon-gu currently operates four centers (Sinjeong 3-dong, Mok 2-dong, Mok 3-dong, Sinwol 6-dong).

The Yangcheon-gu Our Neighborhood Care Centers have consistently had waiting lists since their opening, indicating very high satisfaction among children and parents using the facilities.

In particular, the Yangcheon No. 1 Our Neighborhood Care Center located within an apartment complex (Sinjeong 3-dong, within Dongil Highville Complex 1) opened for the first time in 2019 through a five-year free lease agreement based on active cooperation from the residents' representative council, and it has received great support from residents as a representative care institution in the area.

The public recruitment for the installation of Our Neighborhood Care Centers targets idle spaces within apartment complexes with an area of at least 80㎡ that can be provided free of charge for at least five years. Apartments providing the space will receive priority admission benefits for resident children. If selected, the entire budget required for remodeling and equipment will be supported, and operation will be entrusted to professional organizations such as social welfare corporations.

The district plans to select locations through a comprehensive evaluation of care demand, suitability of space and location, and surrounding care infrastructure.

If you wish to install a care center within your complex, you can download the related documents from the public notice board on the district office website, fill them out, and submit them in person with the required documents to the Family Policy Division on the 5th floor of Haenuri Town, Yangcheon-gu Office.

Mayor Lee Ki-jae said, "We hope many apartments interested in providing safe care services for our children in nearby neighborhoods will participate in the public recruitment for the installation of Our Neighborhood Care Centers."
