Heavy Rain Continues in the Seoul Metropolitan Area... 9 Dead and 6 Missing in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Gangwon (Comprehensive) [Image source=Yonhap News]


[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] From the 8th, heavy rain concentrated in the central region including Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi Province has resulted in 9 deaths. There are 6 missing persons and 441 disaster victims.


According to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters (CDSCH) as of 6 PM on the 9th, casualties due to heavy rain are counted as 9 dead (Seoul 5, Gyeonggi 3, Gangwon 1), 6 missing (Seoul 4, Gyeonggi 2). Injuries total 9 (Gyeonggi).


The number of deaths increased by 1 compared to the 3 PM tally. However, the number of missing persons decreased by 1.


Disaster victims amount to 441 people in 328 households, mainly in Seoul and Gyeonggi. They are staying at community centers, school gymnasiums, and lodging facilities.


Temporary evacuation involved 936 people in 317 households. Among public facilities, there were 10 cases of track flooding in Seoul alone, along with 3 cases of embankment collapse and 9 cases of slope failure.


Among private facilities, 741 houses and commercial buildings were flooded, with most in Seoul (684 buildings) and 54 buildings in Incheon. Additionally, there were 4 retaining wall collapses, 14 cases of soil runoff, 5 hectares of crop flooding, and 11 landslides.


Meanwhile, heavy rain warnings have been issued for the metropolitan area and inland/mountainous areas of Gangwon Province, with very heavy rain of 30 to 70 mm per hour falling mainly in northern Seoul, Incheon, northern Gyeonggi, and northern Gangwon. On the 10th, heavy rain is also expected mainly in the central region.
