Starlight Concert and Nationwide Simultaneous 5-Minute Lights-Out Event Among Various Scheduled Programs
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Jeong Hyeong-seok] The 19th Energy Day event, hosted by the Energy Citizens' Coalition and Mokpo Sustainable Development Council, organized by Mokpo YMCA, and supported by Mokpo City, Asia Economy, Jeonnam Joongang Newspaper, Wide News, and Mokpo Citizens Newspaper, will be held on the 22nd from 7:30 PM to 9:10 PM at the 2nd floor Cinema Lounge MM of the Sinan-gun Fisheries Cooperative Mokpo Branch.
Energy Day began when the Energy Citizens' Coalition designated August 22, 2004, as Energy Day to commemorate August 23, 2003, the day with the highest power consumption that year (45.98 million kW), aiming to spread nationwide awareness about climate change and energy conservation.
This year's Energy Day event, under the theme "The 19th Energy Day, Turn Off the Lights and Turn On the Stars," will feature a variety of programs including an opening cultural performance, a starlight concert, and a nationwide simultaneous 5-minute blackout event, with participation from 21 organizations including the National Mokpo Maritime University and invited singers.
Additionally, the event is actively promoting practical actions for citizens such as "Using public transportation instead of private cars," "Maintaining indoor air conditioner temperature between 26°C and 28°C for health," and "Turning off lights for 5 minutes from 9 PM."
Unlike previous years when the event was held online only with significantly reduced participation due to COVID-19, this year plans to encourage many citizens to join in raising awareness of the seriousness of energy issues and actively participate in solving them.
The event will begin with an opening cultural performance featuring Jeong Ok-rye, representative of Parangsae Happiness Sharing Family, performing on acoustic guitar. From 7:50 PM, a 20-minute commemorative ceremony will take place, followed by the starlight concert starting at 8:10 PM, which will include performances by invited singer Choi Hyun-tae, traditional Korean music group Pungmulpae Dangsori, Yudal Opera Company (soprano Moon Anna, baritone Kim Cheol-ung), and Vivace Ensemble, adding to the enjoyment.
The highlight of Energy Day, the "Turn Off the Lights and Turn On the Stars blackout event," will be held nationwide for 5 minutes starting at 9 PM.
An official from the organizing committee stated, "Through the Energy Day event, it is expected to be a meaningful time for citizens to create an environment where future generations can live happily by their own efforts and to recognize the importance of nationwide energy conservation."
