[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, will install and operate a memorial space at Geumnam-ro Park and Dong-gu Humanities Hall on the 14th to commemorate the "2022 Japanese Military Comfort Women Victims Memorial Day," a day to remember the pain of history together.
Memorial Day is a national holiday established to raise awareness of the Japanese military comfort women issue domestically and internationally and to honor the victims. In December 2017, the National Assembly plenary session passed the "Act on the Protection, Support, and Commemorative Projects for Victims of the Japanese Military Comfort Women under Japanese Colonial Rule," designating August 14th as the memorial day annually.
On the 1st, Dong-gu prepared a memorial space at the Humanities Hall, installing a "Wall of Remembrance" where residents can leave messages, along with an introduction to the reasons and history behind the designation of the national memorial day. Additionally, paper kits for making the Statue of Peace are being distributed to visitors of the Humanities Hall.
From the 11th to the 15th, a yellow butterfly sculpture symbolizing the victims of the Japanese military comfort women will be installed next to the "Statue of Peace" located in Geumnam-ro Park, where the memorial space will also be operated.
Im Taek, Mayor of Dong-gu, said, "We have prepared this memorial space to remember the courage and lives of the victims of the Japanese military comfort women and to empathize with their pain," adding, "We hope that the human rights and honor of the comfort women grandmothers will be restored as soon as possible through a sincere apology from the Japanese government."
