Visit to Goyang Hyundai Motorstudio
Experience Hyundai Electric Vehicle Wireless Charging
Check Frequency Demand in New Business Fields
[Asia Economy Reporter Minyoung Cha] The government announced that it will promptly establish a 'Frequency Spectrum Plan' within this year to enable the active utilization of the core radio resource, frequency, by the industry, and will announce it early next year.
On the 9th, Jongho Lee, Minister of Science and ICT, visited Hyundai Motorstudio in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, to inspect electric vehicle wireless charging facilities being demonstrated under a regulatory sandbox by Hyundai Motor Company and to listen to difficulties faced by new industries requiring new frequencies.
During the site visit, Minister Lee personally experienced the wireless charging service using the electric vehicle wireless charger installed in the parking lot of Hyundai Motorstudio in Goyang and received explanations on related technology trends and market prospects.
A meeting with related companies was also held. Hyundai Motor Company stated that management of wireless chargers is excessively strict, requiring individual permits for each location, which is expected to cause difficulties in commercialization after the demonstration period, and requested active government support such as changes in wireless charger management methods.
Minister Lee responded that radio waves inevitably require strict management as they can cause interference with other frequencies and devices and may affect the human body. However, he promised to review institutional improvements in a way that minimizes such concerns while promoting market activation.
Hyundai Motor Company also expressed its electrification transition plan and commitment to technology development to become a leading company in the eco-friendly era. They also conveyed that there is demand for new industry frequencies such as 85 kHz currently used for electric vehicle wireless charging demonstrations.
The government also plans to establish a 'Spectrum Plan to Support Digital Innovation' within this year, considering that radio waves are converging into various new industries beyond mobile communications, such as electric vehicle wireless charging, robots, Urban Air Mobility (UAM), and satellites. It will be announced early next year after collecting expert opinions.
After the site visit, Minister Jongho Lee said, "Seeing the site of the country's first electric passenger car wireless charging service, it seems that electric vehicle wireless charging service will soon become a part of daily life," and emphasized, "There is no absolute leader in the wireless charging market yet, but if we concentrate the capabilities of the nation and industry based on our ICT infrastructure, Korea can lead the global market."
He added, "We plan to proactively review the requested frequency demands and institutional improvement matters," and said, "We hope that the government's proactive frequency supply and institutional improvements will serve as a foundation for Korea to lead the global market during the digital transformation era not only in electric vehicle wireless charging but also in new industry fields."
