UN Secretary-General: "Risk of Nuclear Confrontation Returns After Decades"

[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Ant?nio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), warned that attacking nuclear power plants is a "suicidal act."

According to foreign media on the 8th, Guterres, who is currently visiting Japan, held a press conference at the Japan National Press Club in Tokyo and made this statement in relation to reports that the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine, occupied by Russian forces, was shelled.

He said that the risk of nuclear confrontation has returned after decades and urged nuclear-armed countries to commit to not using nuclear weapons preemptively.

He emphasized the awareness that the damage caused by the use of nuclear weapons is "beyond the UN's ability to respond" and that they must never be used, according to Kyodo News.

Before the press conference, he held talks with Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi. The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the two shared "serious concerns about the urgent regional situation and agreed on the importance of easing tensions."
