[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] Hyundai Card is opening its fifth library, the ‘Hyundai Card Art Library,’ in Itaewon.

On the 8th, Hyundai Card announced that it will introduce the ‘Hyundai Card Art Library’ in Itaewon, Seoul, which gathers various books and materials centered on contemporary art. This comes five years after the opening of the ‘Hyundai Card Cooking Library’ in 2017.

Regarding the choice of contemporary art as the theme, Hyundai Card explained that it reflects the current perspective of the times while sharing the design context that Hyundai Card has valued.

Hyundai Card has long supported various exhibitions related to the field of contemporary art. Since partnering with the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York in 2006 and exclusively sponsoring major exhibitions, it opened the exhibition space ‘Hyundai Card Storage’ in 2016 to introduce works by global artists to Korea.

In creating this art library, Hyundai Card focused on filling it with books related to artists and works recognized for their art historical value rather than architectural grandeur. To this end, it collected over 6,000 books related to contemporary art, including ‘Artists’ Publishing Books,’ which are books made directly by artists and regarded as artworks themselves, as well as rare editions recognized for their value by museums worldwide.

Four book curators recognized for their expertise in the contemporary art field worldwide, including a curator from MoMA and the dean of the St?delschule Art Academy in Germany, participated in selecting the collection to enhance professionalism.

The ‘Complete Collection’ prepared alongside the opening of the space also draws attention. The Complete Collection gathers all issues of a book or magazine from the first to the most recent.

The Hyundai Card Art Library introduces to visitors the entire 710 exhibition catalogs published from 1929, when MoMA opened, to the present, the entire 98 catalogs from the Venice Biennale since its inception in 1895, and the complete set of ‘Parkett Magazines,’ known as the ‘laboratory of contemporary art,’ which was collaboratively produced by artists and curators from planning to production.

Additionally, a ‘Moving Image Room’ has been prepared where visitors can experience famous media and performance works. Here, visitors can watch media and performance works and records from the 1960s and 1970s by renowned artists who greatly influenced the expansion of contemporary art.

Admission to the Hyundai Card Art Library is free for Hyundai Card members and up to two accompanying guests. Hyundai Card Dive app members can use the facility free of charge for themselves only.
