[Asia Economy Reporter No Woo-rae] Kim Joo-hyung (20) broke the record for the youngest Korean winner on the U.S. professional golf (PGA) stage.
On the 8th (Korean time), Kim Joo-hyung finished the final day 26 holes of the Wyndham Championship (total prize $7.3 million), the final event of the 2021/2022 PGA Tour regular season, held at Sedgefield Golf Club (par 70, 7,131 yards) in Greensboro, North Carolina, USA, with 9 strokes under par, completing a dominant victory by 5 strokes (20 under par 260 strokes). This was his first win in his 9th tournament this season and 15th PGA Tour event overall. As a prize, he received the PGA Tour card along with the winner's prize money of $1,314,000 (1.7 billion KRW).
Kim Joo-hyung became the 9th Korean player to win on the PGA Tour, following K.J. Choi (52, 8 wins), Yang Yong-eun (50, 2 wins), Bae Sang-moon (36, 2 wins), Noh Seung-yul (31, 1 win), Kim Si-woo (27, 3 wins), Kang Sung-hoon (35, 1 win), Im Sung-jae (24, 2 wins), and Lee Kyoung-hoon (31, 2 wins). He is the first to win as a "special temporary member." He also broke the record for the youngest Korean winner ever (20 years, 1 month, 18 days). Kim Joo-hyung will participate in the first round of the FedEx Cup Playoffs (PO), the FedEx St. Jude Championship (total prize $15 million), held at Southwind TPC in Memphis, Tennessee, USA, on the 11th.
On the previous day, he exchanged one birdie and one bogey in the 10 holes that were not completed due to sunset, then in the 4th round, he collected one eagle and eight birdies (one bogey). He reduced 6 strokes in the first 6 holes with three consecutive birdies from holes 2 to 4, an eagle on hole 5 (par 5), and a birdie on hole 6 (par 4). After gaining momentum with consecutive birdies on holes 8 and 9, he took a breather with a bogey on hole 10 (par 4), then added consecutive birdies on holes 15 and 16, distancing himself from his competitors' chase. Kim Joo-hyung, who said "I still can't believe it," cheered, "I achieved my dream of entering the PGA Tour. This is just the beginning."
Im Sung-jae (24) added 2 under par to finish tied for 2nd place (15 under par 265 strokes). He started the day as the leader by 1 stroke and was expected to win his second title of the season after 10 months since the Shriners Children's Open last October, but faced difficulties on the greens. He entered the top 10 for the 8th time this season and advanced to the FedEx Cup Playoffs ranked 10th. John Huh tied for 2nd, and Billy Horschel (both from the U.S.) tied for 27th (8 under par 272 strokes). For Korea, Lee Kyoung-hoon tied for 61st (4 under par 276 strokes), and Kim Si-woo withdrew.
