[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Se-eun] Ha Tae-kyung, a member of the People Power Party, demanded the rejection of the party constitution amendment that seeks to dismiss party leader Lee Jun-seok, calling it a "path where everyone dies."
On the 7th, Ha posted on his Facebook, "Currently, the People Power Party is engaging in politics like lemmings collectively jumping into the sea, even though death is obvious," and emphasized, "The party constitution amendment to forcibly dismiss Leader Lee is a path leading the party to ruin."
He continued, "Once the amendment passes, Lee's side will have no choice but to file a lawsuit in court to invalidate the emergency committee to protect their honor and political life," adding, "No politician will willingly comply with a forced and dishonorable expulsion instead of opening an honorable exit."
He also expressed concern about the situation that would arise after Lee files the lawsuit to invalidate the emergency committee. Ha said, "After consulting with experts around me, the possibility of a provisional injunction being granted is fifty-fifty," and worried, "Until the court's ruling, our party will be engulfed in severe internal strife. If the court rules the emergency committee invalid, our party will face a crisis severe enough to lead to dissolution."
Furthermore, he urged the National Committee to reject the party constitution amendment, stating, "It is clear what path leads to death and what path leads to survival."
Former People Power Party lawmaker Yoo Seung-min was also seen showing support for Leader Lee.
On the same day, Yoo uploaded a video of the 1979 song "Chiquitita" by the famous pop group ABBA on his Facebook. "Chiquitita" is the feminine form of the Spanish word meaning "little girl."
The lyrics of the song include lines like "You were always sure of yourself / Now I see you've broken a feather" and "Try once more like you did before, / Sing a new song Chiquitita," comforting and encouraging a child going through hardship.
Meanwhile, the People Power Party National Committee is scheduled to convene on the 9th, and it is possible that the appointment of the emergency committee chairman will be finalized and the emergency committee launched as early as that day. According to party rules and regulations, the party leader position of Lee will be terminated simultaneously with the launch of the emergency committee.
Meanwhile, on the 5th, Leader Lee posted on his Facebook, "Those who were cowardly in 2015 were also cowardly in 2022," adding, "I hope that cowardice does not cause another crisis for the party."
This has led to speculation that Lee was referring to former lawmaker Yoo Seung-min, who resigned from the Saenuri Party floor leader position in a similar situation in 2015.
At that time, Lee criticized the incident, saying, "In the past 19 years since President Roh Moo-hyun's impeachment, this is almost the first political upheaval or political event worthy of being included in South Korea's history textbooks," and added, "Former President Park Geun-hye probably did not expect Yoo Seung-min, the floor leader, to act this way.
