[Asia Economy Reporter Song Seung-yoon] As the resurgence of COVID-19 continues unabated, the number of new confirmed cases nationwide remained in the 100,000 range on the 7th.


The Central Disease Control Headquarters announced that as of midnight on this day, 105,507 new COVID-19 cases were reported, bringing the cumulative total to 20,489,128. The number of new cases was 5,159 fewer than the previous day (110,666). The decrease in cases compared to the previous day is likely due to reduced testing over the weekend.


The number of new confirmed cases has remained in the 100,000 range for six consecutive days since the 2nd. This is the first time in 17 weeks since April 10 (164,453 cases) that the number of cases announced on a Sunday has exceeded 100,000. Compared to a week ago on the 31st of last month (73,559 cases), it is 1.43 times higher, and compared to two weeks ago on the 24th of last month (65,372 cases), it is 1.61 times higher.


From the 1st to this day, the daily new confirmed cases over the week were 44,654 → 111,758 → 119,889 → 107,869 → 112,901 → 110,666 → 105,507, averaging 101,892 cases per day. Among the new cases on this day, 484 were imported cases, down 89 from the previous day (573). Excluding imported cases, domestic regional infections numbered 105,023.


By region, the cases were: Gyeonggi 26,291, Seoul 18,366, Gyeongnam 6,736, Gyeongbuk 5,893, Busan 5,828, Incheon 5,625, Daegu 4,721, Jeonbuk 4,481, Chungnam 4,470, Chungbuk 3,656, Daejeon 3,452, Gangwon 3,431, Gwangju 3,415, Jeonnam 3,288, Ulsan 3,135, Jeju 1,828, Sejong 863, and quarantine 28.


The number of critically ill patients was 297, down 16 from the previous day (313). The number of COVID-19 deaths reported the previous day was 27, down 18 from the day before (45). Among the deceased, 17 (63.0%) were aged 80 or older, 5 were in their 70s, 3 in their 60s, and one each in their 40s and 30s. The cumulative death toll is 25,263, with a cumulative COVID-19 fatality rate of 0.12%. As of midnight, the number of patients receiving home treatment was 609,357, an increase of 42,501 from the previous day (566,856), surpassing 600,000.


The utilization rate of critically ill patient beds was 37.0% (624 out of 1,686 beds in use), up 1.7 percentage points (p) from the previous day (35.3%). The utilization rates of semi-critical and moderate severity beds were 58.5% and 43.6%, respectively, rising 4.4%p and 2.2%p from the previous day.
