[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] LG Uplus announced on the 7th that it has signed a business agreement with the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Korea Post (Korea Post), and the small and medium-sized MVNO operator Pretty to address the digital and learning gaps among underprivileged children.

LG Uplus’s flagship social contribution program, the ‘12-Week Challenge,’ supports educational content and online education to help preschool and lower-grade elementary students develop self-directed learning habits.

This initiative targets 300 preschool and first-grade elementary children at regional child centers nationwide. Participating children will receive LG Uplus’s educational content ‘U+ Kids Land’ and specially produced exclusive textbooks. To enable full use of the content, tablet PCs, exclusive textbooks, and communication fees (MVNO pad plan providing 20GB of data monthly for 12 months) will also be supported.

Professional instructors will provide education to help children develop self-directed learning habits. Participating children will attend weekly real-time online classes over 12 weeks, communicating with professional instructors to cultivate proper learning habits. The online education will focus on the ‘Reading TV’ service embedded in U+ Kids Land, along with education to prevent media overexposure.

LG Uplus will cover the costs of content usage, tablets, and communication fees during the 12-Week Challenge. The Korea Post will be responsible for selecting participating children and recruiting professional instructors for online education, while Pretty, the small and medium MVNO operator, will handle the activation of the tablet plans provided free of charge for one year.

Lee Seok-hwan, CEO of Pretty, said, “Through this social contribution activity with LG Uplus and the Korea Post, we will advance the social role of MVNO operators to the next level,” adding, “Beyond social contribution, we will continue to explore ways to cooperate in various fields.”

Son Seung-hyun, head of the Korea Post, stated, “The Korea Post plays a social safety net role for underprivileged groups and disaster areas through the Post Public Foundation,” and added, “It is meaningful to provide digital education opportunities to children, the hope of the nation, together with LG Uplus, which is leading ESG management.”

Park Hyung-il, CRO (Vice President) of LG Uplus, said, “We are pleased to collaborate with the Korea Post, which has always been by the people’s side, on social contribution activities that can alleviate concerns about educational gaps among children,” and added, “We will strive for the successful execution of this project and promote mutual growth through joint social contribution activities with small and medium MVNO operators.”
