Haenam-gun, Use Heat Relief Shelters When It's Hot

Operation of Heat Relief Centers at 595 Village Community Centers... Urging to Refrain from Outdoor Activities

Haenam-gun, Use Heat Relief Shelters When It's Hot

[Haenam=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Hyun] Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do, has launched a safety inspection to help elderly people vulnerable to heatwaves have a healthy summer.

On the 5th, Haenam-gun announced that it has established a "Heatwave Response Safety Measures for Vulnerable Elderly" and built a situation management system for vulnerable groups such as elderly living alone.

Accordingly, 595 village senior centers in the jurisdiction have been designated as heatwave shelters, which will be used as resting places for the elderly during heatwaves.

The county has appointed public officials in charge of the shelters, checking the operation of cooling devices and hygiene conditions, and plans to raise the support unit price for cooling and heating devices considering the rise in prices.

Currently, 621 elderly leisure and welfare facilities, including senior centers and senior welfare centers in the jurisdiction, are operating in strict compliance with quarantine rules, and the relevant senior center will be closed if a COVID-19 case occurs.

In addition, for vulnerable groups, when a heatwave advisory is issued, life support workers of the elderly customized care service provide guidance on heatwave response actions and conduct preemptive damage prevention activities through phone calls or visits. Emergency safety and security service equipment has also been additionally installed to establish a constant contact system for emergency situations, ensuring thorough safety checks for the elderly.

Furthermore, the senior job projects are flexibly operated to encourage rest and refrain from outdoor activities during the hot hours from 12 PM to 5 PM. Project groups with many outdoor activities operate mainly in the early morning.

Meanwhile, Haenam-gun is promoting a comprehensive heatwave response plan until September 30 to prevent casualties caused by summer heatwaves and minimize inconvenience to residents. A joint T/F team has been formed to manage real-time situations.

Myung Hyun-gwan, the mayor of Haenam-gun, said, "Since outdoor activities such as farming during heatwaves can put you in dangerous situations, I ask elderly people to pay special attention to their own safety," and added, "The county will also support elderly people to have a healthy summer through operating heatwave shelters."
