[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Jongno-gu (Mayor Jeong Mun-heon) will stage the reading musical "Tongin-dong 128beonji," which depicts the independence movement of the Udang Lee Hoe-young family, to commemorate Liberation Day on August 15.
The performance, which can be seen on August 10 and 11 at 7 p.m. at the Jongno Community Center Changsin Art Hall (7-5 Jibong-ro 5-gil), portrays the life of Udang Lee Hoe-young and his family, who gave up wealth and honor to join the independence movement.
The title "Tongin-dong 128beonji" is the registered address of the Lee Hoe-young family after liberation. When they fled to China to continue the independence movement but returned to Joseon due to lack of funds, the place they stayed was exactly at 128 Tongin-dong, Jongno-gu.
The Udang Lee Hoe-young family was one of the most prestigious families and among the wealthiest during the Japanese colonial period, able to live comfortably without major difficulties. However, they willingly disposed of their entire fortune, worth over 3 trillion won in today's value, dedicating everything to the country's independence.
Jongno-gu focused on the connection between Jongno and the Lee Hoe-young family and planned this performance to remember the life of Udang Lee Hoe-young, who practiced noblesse oblige.
Actor Park Hyung-joon plays Udang Lee Hoe-young, Shin Seo-ok plays Young-gu Lee Eun-sook, and the narration is by former Daegu Municipal Theater trainer Lee Dong-hak. To apply for viewing, please refer to the Jongno Cultural Foundation website and apply via Naver Form.
Previously, as part of the "Local Historical Figures Discovery Project," Jongno-gu collaborated with the Udang Lee Hoe-young Education and Culture Foundation to produce stage videos, which were released on the Jongno Cultural Foundation's YouTube channel in December last year. Comments such as "It beautifully and poignantly shows painful history" and "The efforts of those who lived for the nation and people are vividly felt" continue to receive praise.
"Tongin-dong 128beonji" is preparing to meet overseas audiences as well, scheduled to be performed at the Dear Palace Theater in the UK this coming November.
Mayor Jeong Mun-heon said, "Udang Lee Hoe-young is a representative figure who showed the sacrifice of the leadership during the nation's hardship. We will continue to prepare various stages highlighting figures who left significant marks on Jongno's historical culture."
Visitors are watching the opening commemorative video in the Media Hall on the first floor of Jungnang Mangwoo Space.
Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) announced that the promotional video for Mangwoo History and Culture Park, produced to commemorate the opening of Jungnang Mangwoo Space, won the Excellence Award in the Media Facade Content category at the 11th Seoul Good Light Awards competition.
The Good Light Awards competition is held annually to prevent light pollution and create a high-quality nighttime cityscape. It includes categories such as academic, design, construction, and media facade content, selecting one grand prize winner and one excellence award winner per category.
The promotional video that won the Excellence Award expresses the history and value of the park along with the patriotic martyrs resting there, using CG morphing techniques to create a fantastic feeling as if viewing outer space, receiving high praise for its educational and artistic aspects.
The video is available for viewing at any time in the media hall on the first floor of Jungnang Mangwoo Space, which opened in April within Mangwoo History and Culture Park.
Mangwoo History and Culture Park has been operated by Jungnang-gu since July 2020, after receiving park management rights from Seoul City. Since the opening of Jungnang Mangwoo Space, the park has become a representative historical and cultural park in Seoul, hosting memorial services for many modern historical figures resting there, as well as various exhibitions, concerts, and film festivals, offering not only walks but also diverse cultural and artistic experiences.
Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi said, "It is meaningful that the promotional video capturing the park's value won the Excellence Award at the Good Light Awards, recognizing its worth. We will continue to cultivate Mangwoo History and Culture Park, a living history museum of Korea's modern history, into a beautiful space harmonized with nature and a historical education landmark visited by many."
Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Kang-soo) announced that it will operate the "2022 Dream Darak Saturday Culture School Youth Song Camp," supporting youth music creation activities.
On June 15, the Mapo-gu Mangwon Youth Culture Center (Director Lee Hee-soo) was selected as the operating institution for the "2022 Dream Darak Saturday Culture School Youth Song Camp," hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and organized by the Korea Arts & Culture Education Service.
This song camp breaks away from the traditional one-way music knowledge delivery education, allowing youths to actively participate in music creation activities.
Participants will play instruments using coding boards and motion recognition, and create songs containing their own thoughts and stories. They will also engage in cultural and artistic creative activities such as performances and music video filming.
The activities will be held every Saturday from August 27, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., for a total of 13 sessions. The venue is the Mapo-gu Mangwon Youth Culture Center (164 World Cup-ro 25-gil) or external performance locations.
The program includes orientation, composition and practice using coding boards and motion recognition, vocal lessons, instrument interviews, and music video filming. Middle and high school students who cannot play instruments are also eligible to apply.
Based on the song camp activities, the district plans to hold performances where youths and local residents can communicate together at events such as the Mapo Sky Yeondal Festival and Mapo-gu Youth Musical Festival.
Applications and program information can be found on the Mapo-gu Mangwon Youth Culture Center website under "Community ? Program Notices," and inquiries can also be made by phone.
The Mapo-gu Mangwon Youth Culture Center was recognized for operating various programs such as the Youth Musical Troupe, Do-dream Entrepreneurship, Self Project, and Youth After-school Academy, and was selected as the best institution for three consecutive years in the comprehensive evaluation of youth training facilities by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family last year.
Mayor Park Kang-soo said, "I hope this song camp activity will bring out the latent musical sensitivity of youths and strengthen their musical capabilities. We will strive to create various performance opportunities linked with the local community so that youths can freely showcase their musical talents."
