Portraying Young An Jung-geun... Kim Hoon's Novel 'Haerbin' Ranks 10th Upon Release


[Asia Economy Reporter Seo Mideum] In the first week of August, the comprehensive bestseller chart on Yes24 saw the original screenplay book of the long-running hit film "Decision to Leave," which sparked the "N-times viewing" craze, hold the top spot for the third consecutive week. "Heunhan Nammae 11," warmly received by young fans, maintained its 2nd place from the previous week, while "I Will Keep Going," which contains 10 years of records and resolutions by whistleblower prosecutor Im Eun-jung, took 3rd place. "The Regressor," a life hacking guide by Jacheong targeting economic freedom, ranked 4th, and the heartwarming story "Uncomfortable Convenience Store," comforting weary people’s daily lives, secured 5th place.


With the addition of highly anticipated new releases, the novel category continued its strong performance this week. The revised edition of "Pachinko 1," a novel by author Min Jin Lee depicting the turbulent life of a Korean-Japanese family over four generations, rose one spot to 6th place. Kim Ho-yeon’s novel "Uncomfortable Convenience Store 2," portraying summer stories at a convenience store in Cheongpa-dong, ranked 7th through pre-orders. Kim Hoon’s novel "Harbin," which offers a profound perspective on the fate of An Jung-geun who had to navigate turbulent times, entered the chart at 10th place upon release. Hwang Bo-reum’s novel "Welcome to Hyunamdong Bookstore," offering comfort to all who are wounded, ranked 14th this week.


In the e-book category, the top spot went to EBS FM’s practical speaking guide "English Speaking That Opens Your Mouth August 2022 Issue," which provides topic-based speaking training for OPIc preparation. Following that, the novel "Hakuda Photo Studio," set in a photo studio on Jeju Island and delivering gentle consolation and warm smiles, ranked 2nd.


Books recommended by former President Moon Jae-in on social media are attracting significant attention. After "The Birth of Zhanggaejui" in June and "The Power of Geopolitics" in July entered the rankings following Moon’s SNS reviews, this week two volumes from the "Citizen’s Korean History" series ranked 15th and 18th respectively, drawing interest.


"Citizen’s Korean History" is a comprehensive history of Korea from prehistoric times to the modern era. On the 28th, former President Moon recommended it on Twitter with a review stating, "It’s a good book to keep on your shelf and refer to when needed." According to Yes24’s data, the largest age group purchasing the "Citizen’s Korean History" series was people in their 40s at 40.9%, followed by those in their 30s (25.6%) and 50s (21.1%) at similar rates. Female buyers accounted for 56.3%, while male buyers made up 43.7%.
