What Are the 10 New Changes 30 Days After Jeon Seongsu's Inauguration as Seocho-gu Mayor?

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Marking one month since Jeon Seong-su took office as Seocho District Mayor, attention is drawn to the 10 new changes achieved since the launch of the 8th local government.

The district is implementing these 10 new changes: ▲100-Day Daily Life Recovery Project ▲On-site communication program 'Visiting Seocho, This is Jeon Seong-su' ▲Wednesday meetings with the mayor 'Let's Meet the Mayor' ▲365-day direct complaint resolution 'Seongsu's Direct Line' ▲Citizen rights protection system 'Complaint Ombudsman' ▲Illegal banner cleanup at rallies and demonstrations ▲Development of local brand commercial district along Yangjaecheon Stream and designation of Maljukgeori Alley Shopping District ▲Nature education program for children 'Yangjaecheon Cheoncheon Tour' ▲Revitalization of 'Seoripul Instrument Street,' a classical music premium street ▲Promotion of 'Paperless Executive Meetings.'

First, the '100-Day Daily Life Recovery Project' is a comprehensive initiative by Seocho-gu to help citizens recover their daily lives exhausted by COVID-19, and it is also a key pledge of the mayor. A task force team (TF) was formed within the working group, which consists of four sectors: resident life, welfare support, livelihood economy, and health care, to eliminate departmental barriers and concentrate all administrative capabilities of the district. A total of 69 projects are underway for daily life recovery, including the Seo Ripul Festival, operation of the Seocho Market direct transaction marketplace, and a post-COVID-19 aftereffects counseling center, with a total budget of 18.3 billion KRW, including an additional supplementary budget of 5.8 billion KRW.

Every Wednesday is a day when the mayor meets residents directly. On the 1st, 3rd, and 5th weeks, the mayor visits complaint sites to listen to residents’ voices through the 'Visiting Seocho, This is Jeon Seong-su' program, and on the 2nd and 4th weeks, the mayor holds meetings inside the district office with residents who want group complaints or one-on-one meetings through the 'Let's Meet the Mayor' program.

The complaint handling system has also been improved. The 'Seongsu's Direct Line' operates 365 days a year, accepting complaints via text messages, KakaoTalk, and SNS, and resolving them within three days. Additionally, the 'Complaint Ombudsman' objectively investigates and handles grievances to protect citizens’ rights.

Illegal banners at rally and demonstration sites will be completely eliminated in Seocho-gu. Over the past month, about 110 personnel were deployed to remove illegal banners hung without rallies or demonstrations. Continuous patrols and law enforcement will be maintained to ensure citizen safety and uphold the city’s dignity.

The local commercial districts will be revitalized through the 'Development of Local Brand Commercial District along Yangjaecheon Stream and Designation of Maljukgeori Alley Shopping District.' The 'Yangjaecheon Stream Commercial District' was selected for Seoul’s 'Local Brand Commercial District Development Project' and will receive 3 billion KRW in city funds over three years to be developed into a 'nature-friendly, high-quality cultural and artistic commercial district.' Additionally, 'Maljukgeori near Yangjae Station,' a local commercial district neglected by government support, will be designated as the first alley-type shopping district to receive government support comparable to traditional markets.

The excellent environmental education program 'Yangjaecheon Cheoncheon Tour,' which has won major domestic and international awards, will resume this month. It offers children enjoyable urban ecological experiences and raises awareness of environmental conservation. Detailed programs include raft experiences, feeding carp and ducks, flower planting, and observing vine tunnels, providing unique educational experiences.

'Seoripul Instrument Street,' Korea’s representative classical premium street, will be further revitalized. Various programs and projects will be promoted, such as the 'Visiting Flower Seat Concert,' which delivers classical and jazz music in outdoor spaces like parks, plazas, and streets around the instrument street; the 'Seocho Chamber Music Festival,' featuring young artists performing various concerts centered on classical music; and the relay concert 'Classic Dabang,' which activates small performance venues and provides performance opportunities for cultural artists.

Finally, the 'Paperless Executive Meetings' are being implemented to reduce staff burdens and conduct meetings without formality, ensuring thorough handling of current issues while running efficient meetings.

Seocho District Mayor Jeon Seong-su said, “While continuing administrative continuity and upholding the fundamental principle of ‘trust,’ I will boldly and rationally change areas that need transformation.” He added, “Starting with the 10 new changes of the 8th local government, I will strive for citizen happiness where ‘today is happy and tomorrow is something to look forward to.’”
