[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyun-joo] There has been criticism that the Taegeukgi pattern was incorrectly drawn on souvenir T-shirts at Legoland in the United States.
Professor Seo Kyung-deok of Sungshin Women's University posted on his Facebook on the 3rd, saying, "Due to COVID-19 over the past two years, overseas travel was restricted, so we could not carry out the 'Worldwide Taegeukgi Error Correction Campaign,' but recently, as overseas travel became possible, we started receiving reports of Taegeukgi errors." He also stated that he sent a correction request email to Legoland.
Looking at the released T-shirt photo, the colors of the Taegeuk in the Taegeukgi are reversed top and bottom, and the positions of the four trigrams (Geon, Gon, Gam, Ri) are also incorrect.
Professor Seo said, "So far, we have received many reports about incorrectly displayed Taegeukgi at famous tourist spots worldwide, museums and art galleries, hotel entrances, and tourist buses, and have been steadily correcting them together with netizens." He also informed that Taegeukgi errors were found in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) 2022 Qatar World Cup Asian qualifiers match schedule.
He further speculated on the cause of the repeated Taegeukgi pattern errors, saying, "It is often because websites that sell national flag designs by country download and use incorrectly designed Taegeukgi patterns."
Professor Seo emphasized, "The design of a national flag, which is a symbol of a country, must be corrected if it is wrong," and added, "I will soon send protest emails to all reported places to ensure corrections are made."
